Doctoral Student in Audio Signal Processing
A DOCTORAL STUDENT POSITION IN AUDIO SIGNAL PROCESSING
The position is located in the Department of Signal Processing and Acoustics at the main campus of Aalto University, Espoo, Finland.
The position is related to the Nordic Sound and Music Computing University Hub (Nordic SMC), which brings together a group of internationally leading sound and music computing researchers from all five Nordic countries, from Aalborg University (AAU), Aalto University (AALTO), KTH Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), University of Iceland (UoI), and University of Oslo (UiO) with the aim of consolidating and strengthening the international research profile of the partners in the field of sound and music research. This entails new PhD positions and a research school collaboration with the Nordic partners, and research and infrastructure collaboration with the different institutions. The constellation is unique in that the network covers the field of sound and music from the soft to the hard, including the arts and humanities, the social and natural sciences as well as engineering, and with a high level of technological competency.
We are looking for a person interested in signal processing and machine learning research for the analysis, synthesis, and modification of audio signals. Sound and music computing applications in this area are highly creative, usually requiring real-time performance and often involving sensors to provide interaction. It is expected that the appointed candidate will work under the supervision of Professor Vesa Välimäki and will connect with the Aalto Acoustics Lab (http://acousticslab.aalto.fi/), which has outstanding facilities and an exciting community for sound-related research. The doctoral candidate will get a chance to make short visits (Short-Term Scientific Mission, STSM) to the partner universities to collaborate on touch-screen instruments (AAU), large-scale interactive systems (KTH), and motion capture technology (UiO).
We will prioritize applicants who submit a short plan for the doctoral research (2-5 pages) which resonates with the ideas mentioned above.
A successful applicant must have a Master’s degree in a related field, preferably in electrical engineering, computer science, media technology, or music technology. In addition, any prior experience in audio signal processing and real-time audio programming is highly appreciated. The selected person is expected to apply for the right to pursue studies towards the degree of Doctor of Science in Technology at the Aalto School of Electrical Engineering with the major “Acoustics and Audio Signal Processing”. In addition to the main research duties, the doctoral student will contribute to teaching and administrative activities, as instructed by the supervisor.
Minimum requirements:
The position is immediately available, starting for example on June 1, 2018. The initial appointment will be for 1 year, and can be continued to 4 years, the nominal time for doctoral studies at Aalto University. The expected starting salary for a doctoral candidate is approximately 2000-2400 €/month and follows the university salary system.
