Research Assistant/Associate in Low Pressure Ratio Fan Operability and Integration (Fixed Term)

A position exists for a Research Assistant/Associate in the Department of Engineering to work on the numerical prediction of Low Pressure Ratio Fan Aerodynamic Integration and Operability. The next generation of turbofan engines will have low fan pressure ratios, with larger, reduced-speed fans operating in novel, more aggressive intakes. There are many challenges in the design of these coupled fan and intake systems. The fan design is currently compromised by the uncertainty in the position of the stability boundary. In addition, the flow field presented to the fan can be highly non uniform and varies between flight conditions. This project aims to establish advanced computational methods that can accurately reproduce the instability aerodynamics and performance of low pressure ratio fans operating in clean and distorted inflows. High fidelity unsteady simulations of recent coupled intake-fan designs will be completed to understand the flow features leading to stall at critical operating points and to examine the impact of aerodynamic interaction on efficiency and aeromechanical forcing. The researcher will work closely with academics and students in Cambridge and industry contacts. This project is part of a much wider programme of research on this topic, and so there is good opportunity for interaction with other aspects of the work within Rolls-Royce plc and the various universities involved.

The skills, qualifications and experience required to perform the role are: 1. A PhD (or be close to obtaining a PhD) in turbomachinery aerodynamics or a related subject 2. Experience of applying advanced 3D CFD methods to complex flows. 3. Ability to interact well with other researchers and to publish research papers. 4. Ability to organise own time and to independently drive research activities.

Salary Ranges: Research Assistant: £25,728 - £30,688 Research Associate: £31,604 - £38,833
