PhD position within Marine Power Transmission Systems (IV-108/18)


Department of Marine Technology have an open PhD position related to this topic: 
 Reliability Assessment of Propulsion Systems in Low Speed Maneuvering through Digital Twin Modelling Approach.


The objective of this PhD project is to develop models and methods to assess the reliability of the ship power train system during slow maneuvering. Field data, provided by the industrial partners, will be used to identify the “most vulnerable” components. The collected data include physical properties of the propulsion system, the operational data from simulations and measurements, as well as the failure database. High fidelity models are needed to analysis the vibration and dynamic response of the power train and the stochastic excitations to establish the reliability model. Multi-body system (MBS) dynamic analysis and FEM models are needed to capture the dynamic response of the drivetrain. Drive line consists of power generation systems (often hybrid electrical, diesel), power transmission (rotor, gearbox, couplings, etc.) and the propulsion system. Modelling and analysis of such systems is a multidiscipline engineering task including mechanical, electrical and hydrodynamic knowledge. Moreover, today there are several sensors installed on different locations of the drive line and many data are continuously gathered. The concept of Digital Twin will be applied to study the “time-dependent reliability” of this system. The power system de-grades as the time goes and therefore the system reliability analysis must consider de-gradation models. All ingredients to build a Digital Twin of a power train system are available in this project, which will be used to build a time-dependent reliability model. The results of this project will provide a baseline for designing reliable vessels operating under the IMO emission regulations. The present PhD project will take advantage of collaboration with researchers at NTNU, SINTEF Ocean, DNV GL, and the industry.

The position requires a Master’s degree in mechanical engineering, marine technology, electrical engineering, industrial mathematics or a similar relevant area. The successful candidate should be enthusiastic and highly motivated and be willing to work both independently and with other researchers. Academic results, publications, relevant specialization, work or research experience, personal qualifications, fluency in English (written and oral), and motivation will be considered when evaluating the applicants. The successful candidate must also fulfill the requirement for admission to a doctoral program: 


PhD Candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross NOK 436 900 before tax. There will be a 2 % deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross wage.

Engagement as a PhD Candidate is done in accordance with “Regulation concerning terms and conditions of employment for the posts of post-doctoral research fellow, research fellow, research assistant and resident”, given by the Ministry of Education and Research of 19.07.2010. The goal of the positions is to obtain a PhD degree. Applicants will engage in an organized PhD training program, and appointment requires approval of the applicants plan for a PhD study within three months from the date of commencement.


The position is of 3 years duration, without teaching duties. The employment may be prolonged to include 25 % teaching duties.
