Research Assistant/Associate in Bulk Superconductors for Biomedical Applications (Fixed Term)

A position exists, for a Research Assistant/Associate in the Department of Engineering, to work on a project concerning the development of a practical system for generating high magnetic fields using MgB2 Bulk Superconductors. This work forms part of a collaborative project funded by EPSRC between the University, the University of Oxford and Rutherford Appleton Laboratory.

The post holder will be located in Central Cambridge Cambridgeshire, UK.

The key responsibilities and duties are the magnetic characterisation of high performance MgB2superconductors prepared at the University of Oxford, the development of optimal pulse charging strategies for these materials and, working with colleagues from Rutherford Appleton, the integration of these materials into a practical system. The work will include a wide range of activities ranging from physical measurements to equipment construction.

Candidates must have obtained or be shortly about to obtain a PhD in Physics, Engineering or Materials Science or a related scientific discipline and an undergraduate/Masters degree in a relevant scientific/engineering area. They must have experience in the characterisation of superconducting materials or in the engineering applications of superconductors and will preferably also have experience in the construction of experimental apparatus to characterise superconducting materials and/or experience with the growth or characterisation of bulk superconducting materials. A proven ability to use the LabVIEW or Python programming languages for experimental automation is desirable. Candidates must have a demonstrable ability to communicate with academic and industrial partners, a record of publishing high quality research in high quality journals and have the potential to manage their work load.
