A circular economy is an industrial system that is restorative and regenerative by intention and design. It aims to keep products, components, and materials at their highest utilities and values in an integrated and sustainable urban area. Its purpose is to assist society to achieve a better balance and harmony between economy, environment and society. However, it is still a largely untested theoretical construct, especially in terms of how it may be applied to large industrial organisations in a major city. The UK Government, in its plans for an Industrial Strategy, has flagged that research is needed to drive growth, job creation and productivity via disruptive, cutting-edge innovations with businesses. The UK Parliament has reported that a more circular UK economy could be worth £9-29bn a year and create 10,000-175,000 jobs across skills levels by 2030, providing we can produce appropriate new business models. In collaboration with leading water company Southern Water (SW), the purpose of this study will be to identify and evaluate the potential use of disruptive circular economy thinking within SW’s below-ground assets followed by application of the approach via an in-depth case study on a wastewater treatment operation.
