The University of Vaasa is implementing its new research-focused strategy through a 10 million Euro investment programme over the coming 3-year period. We are building up our research capabilities by opening up to 20 new Tenure track positions. Our future-oriented investments create a highly dynamic and supportive research environment. We are now inviting applications primarily for the position of Assistant or Associate Professor (Tenure track) in Automation. However, applicants for the position of Professor may also be considered. The level depends on the merits and career stage of the applicant.

Job description

The position is located in the School of Technology and Innovations and connected to the Digital Economy research platform. The research profile of this position focuses on energy efficient and sustainable automation. The purpose of this position is to integrate the activities of energy industry with the activities of all levels of digitalisation to aid sustainability. In current computing infrastructures and ecosystems consisting of devices and networks producing data, a lot of work needs to be done for reducing the overall energy loss to achieve sustainable growth - increasing energy efficiency via automation and optimisation of all sorts is crucial in engineering, businesses as well as in society in general. The scope is on automation technologies towards more efficient, more reliable and more sustainable systems.

The expected areas of expertise and interests can include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • sustainable and energy efficient hardware, software, systems, services and applications
  • digitalisation of energy systems
  • automation via sensors, signal processing, embedded systems, soft computing, imaging, and optimisation
  • IoT/IoE
  • information systems in automation
  • computer science, data structures, analysis of algorithms and their implementation, modelling
  • big data processing
  • cyber security in automation
  • numerical analysis, discrete mathematics, algebra, statistical analysis, applied mathematics
  • electrical engineering
  • telecommunications, geospatial computing, optimisation of wireless sensor networks

We appreciate if you are already focused on some of the above areas of expertise, but we also hope you would direct your research towards some of them.

Applicants should have an appropriate doctoral degree, excellent academic merits, and demonstrated potential for conducting outstanding research. We are particularly interested in applicants with interdisciplinary interests and strong records of, or potential for, excellence in teaching. Experience in obtaining research project funding as well as high-quality scientific publishing are both highlighted. Applicants will also be evaluated on the basis of relevancy and innovativeness of their preliminary research plan on how they would approach the phenomena related to the research platform from the point of view of their own research field.

The scope of responsibilities will be determined according to the career stage of the successful candidate. The Tenure track position is research-oriented, but the appointed person will also participate in teaching, thesis supervision, and acquiring and managing externally funded research projects. The teaching duties of the position are connected to the Bachelor’s  and Master's Programmes in Technology (e.g. Industrial Management and Industrial Digitalisation). The tasks are agreed in more detail in the annual work plan (1624 h).

The research within the position is connected to the Digital Economy research platform at the University of Vaasa. The Digital Economy is a phenomenon-based, multidisciplinary open research platform focusing its activities on digital technologies and their impacts on businesses, individuals, and organisations. Research within the Digital Economy platform concentrates on digital transformation in industry and society. Topics include various aspects of data – generating, collecting, transferring, storing, analysing, managing, utilising, protecting, and securing. The platform impact will be realised through extensive research collaboration with other research institutes and universities, businesses, and public sector organisations. Salary

The salary is based on the Finnish University Salary System for Teaching and Research Staff.  A Professor's salary level is based on demand levels 8-10. The demand levels for an Associate Professor's position are 6-7 and an Assistant Professor's 5-6. An additional personal salary component is paid based on work performance (4-46,3%).

Tenure track at the University of Vaasa

The University’s Tenure track procedure offers the recruited person an opportunity to advance to become a professor of their discipline. The selected candidate can advance to the next career stage provided that he/she succeeds in the regular evaluations of the Tenure track scheme. On the basis of the candidate’s experience and competence, he/she may be employed for a fixed term as Assistant Professor (2-5 years) or Associate Professor (3-5 years). A person demonstrating particular merits and indisputably filling the qualification requirements may be appointed to the position of professor on a permanent basis.
