Assistant or Associate Professor (Tenure Track) in Persuasive Technology

Tenure Track Assistant or Associate Professor Position in Persuasive Technology


The University of Oulu announces a tenure-track opening for highly qualified researchers in the field of information systems science, and more precisely persuasive technology within it.


The positions will be with Oulu Advanced Research on Service and Information Systems (OASIS) Research Unit, see, Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (ITEE, see Oulu Advanced Research on Service and Information Systems Research Unit is one of the world-leading research centers in the field of persuasive technology and systems design. Research at OASIS focuses on persuasive systems design, behavior change, humanized information technologies, service innovation and the next generation of the Web. OASIS employs personnel of about 20 including two full professors. ITEE employs personnel of more than 500 with some 40 professors covering a wide range of ICT expertise. The collaborative network of OASIS includes several major research universities and companies.


The tenure-track position in persuasive technology is directed to investigate and design how information technology influences the way we think and how information systems can and should be designed and developed for beneficial areas such as health, wellbeing and sustainability. The tenure track position is open to highly talented researchers who hold a doctoral degree and have an excellent potential for an outstanding scientific career, and master the abovementioned research topics. Practical exploitation of the research via research projects and other collaboration with companies is important for the position. The successful applicant of this call will be placed at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor of the four-level tenure track system depending on the qualifications. The applicant should indicate on which level they wish to be evaluated on.


Responsibilities and Required Qualifications: A person at any level in the academic tenure track system is expected to conduct world-class scientific research, to be competitive in attracting external funding, to publish in leading journals and conference proceedings, to supervise doctoral and master students, to be an active member of the international scientific community, and to create and teach related B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. level courses.


Required qualifications and career advancement at each tenure track level: Career advancement in the tenure track system is based on assessments of the candidate’s performance and merits.


The position of an assistant professor is for persons who have recently (less than ten years ago) finished their doctoral dissertation and are advancing towards a professional research career. The duration of the period is five years. The advancement assistant professor – associate professor – professor – distinguished professor is described in the University of Oulu Tenure Track guidelines: The position of an associate professor is initially a fixed-term position for five years, but a continuation period may be granted or the position may be made permanent. Being granted continuation for the position requires meeting the criteria mentioned below as well as successful research work as indicated in the University of Oulu Tenure Track guidelines.


Applicants for an assistant or associate professorship are evaluated on the following criteria:

  • publications at an international level: dissemination, quality of the publication forums, references to the publications
  • active role in the training of researchers
  • teaching experience and pedagogic training, ability to produce teaching material, other merits as a teacher, teaching demonstrations
  • acquisition of external funding and exploitation of research results
  • active role in the international scientific community
  • scientific work abroad, international positions, and leadership and interaction skills
  • acknowledgements and awards.

Salary: The salary of the appointee will be based on the demand level chart for teaching and research staff in Finnish Universities. In addition to the basic salary for the appropriate tenure track level, a supplementary salary will be paid for personal achievement and performance, rising to a maximum of 50% of the basic salary level for the post. The salary will thus be roughly 3500 – 4500 €/month for an assistant professor and 4400 – 5500 €/month for an associate professor.

5) A brief account of teaching merits or a teaching portfolio (max 2 pages)

6) Details regarding the acquisition of research funds (incl. the funding source, period of funding and volume)

7) A brief research and action plan (max 3 pages)
