The University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies (UTIAS) and the Division of Engineering Science in the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering at the University of Toronto invite applications for a full-time teaching stream position in engineering design education.  This will be a joint appointment between UTIAS (51%) and the Division of Engineering Science (49%). The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream with an expected start date of September 1, 2021, or shortly thereafter.

The successful candidate for this position will be engaged with teaching a variety of design courses. The Engineering Science program currently has three one-term, cornerstone design courses in the foundation curriculum (years 1 and 2) as well as capstone design courses in each of its eight Majors (years 3 and 4). The candidate will also be expected to contribute to the program by helping redefine, reshape, and continuously improve the Engineering Science design curriculum, and hence, the candidate should be comfortable with a wide variety of design pedagogies, as demonstrated through the application materials.

UTIAS has a rich history of engagement in the Engineering Science design curriculum. In addition, all faculty at UTIAS are involved in teaching courses in the Engineering Science program, making for a natural partnership. However, a background in aerospace studies is not required for applicants interested in applying for this position.

The Faculty seeks applications from individuals who combine demonstrated skills, knowledge, and expertise in (a) engineering design teaching, (b) engineering design practice, with a passion for engineering design education, or (c) both engineering design teaching and practice.  We seek candidates whose teaching interests complement and strengthen our existing strengths. Applicants must have a graduate degree (at least a master’s degree is required) in engineering or a related field at the time of appointment. They must also have a record of excellence in teaching and demonstrate a commitment to developing and improving their pedagogical practices.

For candidates with teaching experience in an academic setting, evidence of excellence in teaching and pedagogical inquiry can be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, awards and accolades, presentations at significant conferences, the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application including a strong teaching statement, sample syllabi and course materials, and teaching evaluations, and strong letters of reference from referees of high standing.

Recognizing that applicants may come from a diversity of backgrounds with respect to teaching experience, we encourage individuals with non-traditional teaching experience to apply.  Teaching experience can fall within a broad range of activities; relevant examples include but are not limited to experience leading successful workshops or seminars, student and/or professional mentorship experience, formal or informal training and teaching experience in an industry or professional setting, other similar activities focused on facilitating learning/skill development for a well-defined audience, professional or industry awards or recognition related to teaching, as well as strong letters of reference from referees of high standing.

Applicants must have, or be eligible for, registration as a Professional Engineer in Ontario. This is important as faculty members teaching design courses to undergraduate students must be Professional Engineers for program accreditation as set out by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board. About the Division

Engineering Science is an undergraduate program within the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering at the University of Toronto that leads to the degree of Bachelor of Applied Science in Engineering Science. The program attracts bright and capable students from across Canada and around the world, making for an excellent and inspiring community of learners, many of whom go on to post-graduate studies in engineering, science, business, medicine, and law. The Division of Engineering Science is the administrative unit within the Faculty that is responsible for this program. Except for this faculty appointment and three others in the Division of Engineering Science, the majority of teaching resources for the program are drawn from departments across the Faculty and outside the Faculty. The program has a world-renowned reputation for innovative engineering pedagogy that integrates a strong foundation in theory with practice.
