Assistant Professor of Teaching in Geological Engineering

The Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences (EOAS) at the University of British
Columbia (UBC) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position as an Assistant
Professor of Teaching in Geological Engineering. The position provides the opportunity to pursue
a career based on excellence in teaching and educational leadership in one of the top programs of
its kind.

The successful candidate will teach core subjects in geological engineering, including geology for
engineers and site investigation, and will oversee a fourth-year capstone engineering design project
course. Applicants must possess a Master's degree or PhD, and be eligible for registration as a
Professional Engineer in the Province of British Columbia (see EGBC). Candidates are also
expected to have industry design experience in one or more areas related to geological engineering,
and competence in geological science and its application to engineering challenges. The position
requires effective communication skills and a commitment to educational leadership in creating
innovative instructional environments in the classroom, laboratory, online, and field settings. The
successful candidate will be expected to participate in management of the Geological Engineering
Program, including course and curriculum development, and will work with EOAS and UBC peers
in the Education Leadership professorial stream to advance the university's teaching and learning

UBC's Geological Engineering Program is celebrating its 100th anniversary, and is internationally
renowned and respected for its teaching and professional development of engineering graduates.
As part of EOAS, this position will build on the department's global leadership in Earth Sciences
education, with the potential to bridge to other engineering disciplines and programs interested in
strengthening or developing experiential learning programs. We seek candidates who have the
capacity and interest to interact with other teaching and learning clusters both within and outside
UBC, developing connections and fostering relationships with local and international engineering
companies, professional societies, and Indigenous communities. EOAS is dedicated to practicing
excellence in evidence-based learning, and provides a supporting environment to new faculty
members to achieve this.
