Assistant Professorship (W2, Tenure Track) Resilient Communication Systems

effective 01.07.2021 or later. The professorship is financed under the umbrella of the LOEWE-center emergenCITY (Die Resiliente Digitale Stadt), which is funded by the Excellence Program LOEWE (LandesOffensive zur Entwicklung Wissenschaftlich-ökonomischer Exzellenz) of the Hessian State Ministry. It is dedicated to the resilience, adaptability and changeability of ICT in digital cities in crises with the involvement of the population. Accordingly, the research and teaching focus of the new professorship is on problems in connection with crisis situations in the digital city.

We are looking for an experienced researcher with excellent scientific credentials and international visibility in one or more of the following research areas:

    • Low power and energy-autonomous communication systems
    • Robust and secure communication for critical infrastructures
    • Robust and autonomous sensing, computing and acting at the edge of the network
    • Approximate computing for communication systems
    • Network coding for resilient communication systems
    • Worst-case performance analysis of communication systems
    • Machine learning for network management and protocol design
    • Communication for networked control of cyber-physical systems
    • Self-X networks, decentralized communications beyond 5G (infrastructure-independent, device-to-device)
    • New generation satellite communications (satellite swarms, routing in space)

The ability to work with technical representatives from related disciplines, especially in connection with the LOEWE center emergenCITY, is required. Applicants are asked to outline the potential of their research for participation in the center.

Applicants must have successfully completed a university degree, excellent doctoral degree and should be able to present further independent and innovative contributions to research and teaching in at least one of the above-mentioned areas. A clear international and interdisciplinary orientation should be evident from their scientific profile.

The assistant professorship is designed as a Qualification Professorship as per § 64 HHG. Accordingly, the maximum period of scientific activities after the PhD degree should not exceed four years. Furthermore, applicants should have completed their PhD degree at a university other than the TU Darmstadt or have been scientifically active outside the TU Darmstadt for at least two years after the PhD degree. Remuneration follows the German W-Besoldung at level W2 Hessisches Besoldungsgesetz. The position is initially limited to six years. For the position, the option for a tenured professorship after a successful tenure procedure is given. Corresponding achievements in research and teaching will be evaluated in the tenure procedure, which can be opened one and a half years before the end of the assistant professorship. After a successful probationary phase, the immediate transition to an unlimited professorship is planned. Further information can be found in the Tenure Guidelines of the TU Darmstadt.
