About the position
We hereby invite applications for an Associate Professorship in secure Systems Engineering at the Department of Information Security and Communication Technology (Institute for Information Security and Communication Technology, IIK).

The Associate Professor is expected to play a leading role in research and research-based education in designing, developing and operating secure systems in cooperation with the existing staff's fundamental security techniques and technologies.

Secure system engineering is the creation of systems that remain dependable in the face of malice, error or mischance. In order to achieve this appropriate tools, processes, and methods are needed to design, implement, and test complete systems, and to adapt existing systems as their environment evolves.

The IIK department has locations at Trondheim and Gjøvik; the successful candidate will join one of these locations - (https://www.ntnu.edu/iik)

IIK carries out internationally competitive research organized in seven cross-disciplinary research groups and laboratories labs including systems security, biometrics, e-health, cryptography and cryptanalysis, critical infrastructure security and resilience, digital forensics, and networking research with interests including IoT, transportation systems, dependability of communication systems and 5G networks.

The position reports to the Head of Department at IIK.

 

Work description

Research activities are expected to have a strong international profile and impact and should have a long-term perspective according to the strategy of the department and be concentrated around basic challenges and enabling technologies. Areas of research is:

  • Secure system design, development and operation
  • Security testing and assurance

Research activities are expected to have a strong international profile and impact and be aligned with the strategy of the department and focusing on basic challenges and enabling technologies.

Other tasks regarding this position:

  • Taking a leading role in research-based education, which includes supervision, teaching, and course development for Bachelors, Masters and Ph.D. students within the department study portfolio
  • Administrative activities, such as hiring committees, educational and research boards, etc., that are conducted at the department

 

Qualification requirements
Associate Professor

The position of Associate Professor requires university education in Computer Science, Mathematics, or a closely related area, and academic competence in the Computer Science relevant to secure systems engineering at least at doctoral level. The ability to initiate and lead research and development work is essential. Strong emphasis will be placed on publication of research results in leading publication channels within his or her subject area with particular attention to work in the past five years.

Other requirements:

The successful applicant will be expected to deliver high-quality teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and undertake supervision of Masters and Doctoral candidates. Evaluation of these skills will be based on documented experience and relevant teaching qualifications. Applicants with teaching experience at university level are preferred. Quality and breadth of the teaching qualifications will be evaluated.

Those who do not have formal qualifications in teaching at university level and who cannot provide documentation of equivalent qualifications must complete an approved pedagogical development programme within two years of appointment.

It is a prerequisite that within three years of appointment, new employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language can demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level three in the course for Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU.

Salary and conditions
The gross salary for the position of Associate Professor code 1011 is normally from NOK 515 200- before tax per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2 % is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criterias in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
The person appointed must live in a location enabling him/her to be present at and available to the institution.

Appointment takes place on the terms that apply to State employees at any time, and after the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

  • Research plan 
  • Description of teaching qualifications based on a list of factors ("Documentation of applicant’s teaching qualifications in connection with appointment to an academic position at NTNU")  
  • Details of projects for which you have been project manager, with information about funding, duration and size 
  • Joint works will be considered. If it is difficult to identify your contribution to joint works, you must attach a brief description of your participation.
