DTR Medicals are endeavouring to introduce their next generation of products embracing elements of circular economy and/or biodegradable/bio composite materials. 


The next generation of product development process needs to embrace aspects of digitalisation of manufacturing process, life cycle analysis and sustainable manufacturing. This project will focus on developing a roadmap based on risk based thinking and organisational knowledge management techniques suggested in ISO9001:2015 quality standard. The first step in the project is to undertake material characterisation study and complete manufacturability analysis in order to develop design and process FMEA (Failure mode effects analysis) guidelines as suggested by the newly proposed VDA-AIAG FMEA guidelines. The study will also include life-cycle analysis of surgical instruments (shelf life, bacterial resistance, storage requirements, waste management) and product environmental interaction with surgical theatres (sterilisation impact). 


The student will choose a product example to demonstrate how digitalising the entire process can help improve design process and shorten product development cycle. The student will use design and material characterisation facilities available at College of Engineering in Swansea University. 


Academic requirements: 

Candidates should have a 2.1 or above in their undergraduate degree in Mechanical/Aerospace/Medical Engineering or a related subject.
