National Imaging Facility – Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (AIBN)
The University of Queensland

Appointment Type: Full-time (100%), fixed-term for up to 5 years
Academic Level: Level E or Level D (dependent on combined industry and academic experience)
Location: St Lucia Campus, Brisbane, Australia

About This Opportunity

UQ hosts the National Imaging Facility Queensland Node (NIF-Q) with facilities at the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (AIBN) and Herston Imaging Research Facility (HIRF) at Herston Campus. This role encompasses the NIF-Q Director and AIBN Group Leader and will be embedded within the research-intensive and infrastructure-rich environment at AIBN.

As a dynamic and strategic research leader, the applicant would establish high-quality discovery and translational research programs across cross-disciplinary fields within radiotheranostics. The position will build critical mass in novel programs exploring theranostics as a new paradigm for understanding and treating disease, addressing critical gaps in the field.

The research should align strongly with AIBN and UQ strategic research strengths and actively contribute to their goals, including leading programs that exploit molecular imaging capabilities to enhance the radiopharmaceutical program at UQ. These activities should drive technological advancements across radiochemistry, pre-clinical imaging, and human and companion imaging, and build capacity in emerging areas of personalized nanomedicine.

The role provides opportunities to contribute to the strategic direction of UQ’s biotechnology ecosystem and, as Director of NIF-Q, support the national NIF office and oversee the delivery of the NIF-Q Facility. The leadership role includes linkages with the broader UQ imaging ecosystem, including HIRF, and opportunities to strengthen international recognition across academia, industry, and government.

This is an exciting opportunity to engage in outstanding research that sustains a reputation at Associate Professor level, while growing international leadership in radiotheranostics. The incumbent will lead within AIBN’s thriving research environment, contribute to service and engagement, and support supervision and training of emerging scientists and facility staff.
