Overview

The Biological and Environmental Systems Science Directorate (BESSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks applicants for the Division Director (DD) of the Environmental Sciences Division (ESD).

Reporting to the BESSD Associate Laboratory Director (ALD), the DD is responsible for leading and stewarding U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) core Science and Technology (S&T) capabilities, including:

  • Earth, Environmental, and Atmospheric Science

  • Advanced Computing, Scientific Visualization, and Data Sciences

  • Earth and Energy Systems Infrastructure Analysis and Engineering

The DD will align these capabilities with existing programmatic missions and emerging opportunities, while establishing and implementing strategic directions in collaboration with BESSD leadership.


About the Environmental Sciences Division (ESD)

The Environmental Sciences Division is an interdisciplinary research and development organization comprising:

  • 140 scientists and engineers

  • $70 million annual budget

  • Over 70 years of local, national, and international research impact

ESD’s vision is to expand scientific knowledge and develop innovative strategies and technologies that boost economic prosperity, ensure energy security, and strengthen national competitiveness while sustaining Earth’s natural resources.

Division scientists conduct research spanning molecular to global scales at the environment–human–energy interface. Primary sponsors include DOE’s:

  • Office of Biological and Environmental Research

  • Bioenergy Technologies Office

  • Water Power Technologies Office

  • Office of Environmental Management

The Division Director provides scientific leadership for ESD’s research programs, ensures research quality, delivers existing programs, develops new initiatives across ORNL, and manages the relationship with the Earth and Environmental Systems Sciences Division within DOE’s Office of Science.


Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership that integrates Division capabilities toward world-class S&T goals

  • Serve as, or supervise, direct program management interfaces with sponsoring organizations

  • Collaborate with management peers to support the ALD in defining and implementing strategic R&D missions for BESSD and ORNL

  • Represent ORNL before advisory committees

  • Promote scientific productivity, impact, and professional engagement of ESD staff

  • Ensure project execution and delivery consistent with budget and schedule commitments

  • Execute line management responsibilities, including supervision of Division leadership, budgeting, business planning, salary planning, recruitment, staff development, employee relations, and performance management

  • Build Division capabilities by attracting and hiring top-tier researchers committed to world-class R&D

  • Serve as the Division work authority, fostering a workplace culture attentive to hazard identification and effective controls

  • Deliver ORNL’s mission by aligning actions with core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service, while promoting equal opportunity and a respectful workplace


Basic Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in an environmental research field (e.g., biogeochemistry, bioenergy, computational environmental science, ecology, earth science, earth system modeling, hydrology, environmental informatics, or a closely related discipline) plus at least 15 years of relevant experience

  • Internationally recognized record of research or technical achievement demonstrated through publications, patents, and/or funded research grants

  • Demonstrated experience managing large-scale scientific projects and collaborative research programs

  • Proven ability to engage effectively with funding agencies such as DOE and initiate substantial new research efforts and collaborations

  • Demonstrated technical and strategic leadership of large, diverse, multidisciplinary organizations

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Ability to interact effectively at the highest levels of internal and external management

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance in a timely manner


Preferred Qualifications

  • Recognized national and international reputation and record of accomplishment in a discipline relevant to ESD’s research portfolio


Special Requirements

  • Q Clearance: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE security clearance

  • Workplace Substance Abuse Program (WSAP): This is a WSAP-designated position requiring a pre-placement drug test and participation in a random drug testing program

  • Visa Sponsorship: Not available for this position
