Doctoral student in spectral turbulent-wing simulations and experimentsSchool of Engineering Sciences at KTHProject descriptionThird-cycle subject: Fluid mechanics The goal of this project is to use computational-fluid-dynamics (CFD) methods and experiments for the analysis of turbulent flows around wings, with an emphasis on ground-effect applications and bio-inspired geometries. To this end, high-order spectral methods will be employed to perform both well-resolved large-eddy simulations and direct numerical simulations, in order to assess the influence of pressure-gradient, wall curvature and three-dimensionality in the dynamics of wall-bounded turbulence. We are also interested in using experimental methods to validate and extend the conclusions. The researcher will have access to the multi-peta scale supercomputing facilities available at KTH, in conjunction with the Swedish e-Science Research Centre (SeRC, www.e-science.se) and will become part of the excellent research environment FLOW (www.flow.kth.se).Experimental work will be conducted at the high-end testing facilities at KTH and at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. Supervision: Ricardo Vinuesa and Raffaello Mariani at KTH, and New Tze How, Daniel at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore is proposed to supervise the doctoral student.
