General Description

The Whiting School of Engineering at Johns Hopkins University seeks creative and motivated applicants for a teaching track faculty position in the area of multidisciplinary engineering design. The Whiting School of Engineering has a well-established non-tenure track career path for full-time teaching faculty culminating in the rank of Teaching Professor. This is a career-oriented, renewable appointment that is responsible for the development and delivery of multidisciplinary design courses and the overseeing of design team projects by undergraduate students from majors throughout the university (https://engineering.jhu.edu/multidisciplinarydesign/). The faculty member will have the opportunity to engage in other teaching opportunities and academic initiatives. Extensive grading support is provided to all instructors. Teaching faculty members are also encouraged to engage in departmental and university service and may have advising responsibilities.

  • Teaching human-centered design content
  • Mentoring project teams comprised of students from across both engineering and non-engineering disciplines
  • Sourcing external projects from industry
  • Course management and logistics
  • Student evaluation

Qualifications

Applicants for the position must have a Masters degree or Ph.D. in an engineering discipline, computer science, or a closely related field, demonstrated excellence in and commitment to teaching and/or mentoring, and excellent communication skills. Candidates are expected to bring experience applying engineering design principles in professional settings that may include industrial, biomedical, governmental and/or social-mission organizations. Applications from academics with experience in translational and applied research are also encouraged. Experience in project-based learning and/or a background in a human-centered design process are desired.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
