In-Situ Dimensional Metrology Of Hybrid Manufactured Parts

 

 

This PhD topic is a close collaboration between the Manufacturing Metrology (MM) and the Additive Manufacturing (AM) research groups at KU Leuven. The AM group has been working on AM since 1990 and is considered a pioneer in the area of 3D-printing research. Current research activities are: broadening the materials palette for AM; relating process conditions to static and dynamic mechanical properties; machine design and process optimization (software and hardware) and quality control. Quality control is also the main research topic of the MM group as the MM research group investigates, develops, optimizes and implements measurement solutions for manufacturing quality control. The expertise covers surface and 3D coordinate metrology using tactile and optical probes as well as X-ray Computed Tomography (CT). The targets are Industry 4.0 readiness of measurement solutions by increasing speed, reducing measurement errors, and establishing traceability, to realize in-line and in-process capabilities that intelligently feed-back inspection results for first-time-right and zero-waste manufacturing. This PhD project is part of a larger strategic research project, called Hi-Pas, involving researchers from VUB, University of Antwerp and KU Leuven. In Hi-Pas the capabilities of a beyond state-of-the-art hybrid laser-based additive and subtractive manufacturing platform will be explored. This specific PhD project will concentrate on the R&D and the integration of an in-situ metrology approach into the hybrid laser-based additive-subtractive research platform. The applicability of a novel Interferometric technique will be extensively investigated with regard to its integration and usage in an additive manufacturing powder bed-based system. The aim is to have an in-situ and in-process metrological approach that will quantify the surface roughness and the global form geometry of the manufactured AM component.

 

In addition, the first steps of a common path planning tool will be initiated as well. The developed method will allow to quantitatively assess the surface and the form quality of additively manufactured components with a high degree of precision. This will be a key-enabler for first-time right processing as it opens the door to in-process form control .

 

 

Profile

 

    Masters degree in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering or Physics or an equivalent university-level degree and relevant experience

    Strong and demonstrated experimental and computer programming skills

    Interest in metrology, instrument evaluation and data processing

    Interest in the physical and mathematical background of data processing methods

    Ability to work as an independent and flexible researcher in interdisciplinary teams

    Strong English writing and speaking skills

We offer a PhD position at the Group T Campus Leuven in the Manufacturing Metrology research group. The research will be executed in the AM lab of KU Leuven.
