In preparation for the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021, the School of MACE is seeking to appoint a Knowledge Transfer Research Associate to prepare an Impact Case for Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH).  SPH has emerged in the past 20 years to revolutionise the world of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) for engineering application.  Conventional engineering simulation is dominated by techniques using a computational grid or mesh.  This has prohibitive limitations for applications with large distortion occurring in violent flows or multi-phase mixing phenomena.  As a meshless simulation technique, SPH is being used for entirely new areas of application from laser cutting to nuclear sludge waste flows to multi-phase wave impact on offshore structures.  With the release of the open-source SPH code, DualSPHysics, SPH@Manchester has led the development of this field with 45,000 downloads worldwide, leading to new cost savings, increased capability, and new product development.

The successful candidate will understand how engineering companies use simulation software for fluid dynamics and incorporate new research into their activities. Excellent communication, planning, writing and curation skills are also needed in addition to a willingness to travel to visit stakeholders.

The School of MACE
