The School of Chemical Engineering is an international leader in the chemical engineering field and has an excellent reputation, built over 100 years at The University of Queensland.

We deliver quality programs and leadership in chemical engineering education, research and development, and expert consulting to support the process industries. Undergraduate teaching within the School focuses on the disciplines of chemical, bioprocess, biomedical, materials, environmental and metallurgical engineering and postgraduate programs are available in growing fields including water, sustainable energy, bioprocess and biomedical engineering. The School’s project-centred curriculum has been recognised as an international exemplar of engineering education.

Worldwide, UQ Chemical Engineering was ranked 45th in the QS World University Rankings 2021 for Chemical Engineering. Central to the School’s success are our staff, specifically the academic, research and professional staff. Catalysed by our move to a new home for Chemical Engineering at UQ in 2021, the soon to be completed eleven story, state-of-the-art Andrew N. Liveris Building, the School is entering an exciting growth and rejuvenation phase. About This Opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity for a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer to join the School of Chemical Engineering. The position is open to all areas of Chemical Engineering. Areas of particular interest include electrochemical engineering, food engineering, process systems engineering and data science, and energy. In this role, you will undertake teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels (including course coordination), higher degree research (HDR) student supervision, research, and service and engagement activities.

As a Lecturer (Level B), some of your duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Coordinate courses, prepare and deliver lectures and tutorials, and undertake assessment and marking for undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
  • Teach effectively across different settings using appropriate student-centred pedagogies and continuous improvement through reflection and feedback.
  • Maintain and improve the quality of courses and teaching as measured through evaluation instruments to meet industry and educational standards.
  • Actively contribute towards educational practice and innovative curriculum design including online learning and alternative teaching methods.
  • Contribute to the development of new programs and course material as required, by consulting with program advisors and stakeholders, ensuring courses are engaging, relevant and contemporary.
  • Develop an independent and/or team research program to achieve national recognition and impact
  • Work with colleagues and postgraduates in the development and conduct of joint research projects and applications for competitive research funding support
  • Maintain an active and effective record of publishing research outputs with a lead role in some outputs, in high quality, top quartile research journals, other appropriate refereed publications, and conference publications.

As a Senior Lecturer (Level C), you will complete all of the above duties as well as:

  • Develop an active and effective record of supervising Higher Degree by Research students as a principal supervisor and establish a track record of achievement in supervision outcomes.
  • Develop an independent and/or team research program to achieve national recognition and impact with a developing international profile in the research discipline.
  • Maintain an active and effective record of publishing, often as lead contributor, research outputs, with a lead role in some outputs, in high quality, top quartile research journals, other appropriate refereed publications, and conference publications.

This position is located at our picturesque St Lucia campus, renowned as one of Australia’s most attractive university campuses, and located just 7km from Brisbane’s city centre. Bounded by the Brisbane River on three sides, and with outstanding public transport connections, our 114-hectare site provides a perfect work environment – you can enjoy the best of both worlds: a vibrant campus with the tradition of an established university.

For US applicants, please note that Australian Universities use British terminology, as such a Lecturer position is equivalent to that of a non-tenured Assistant Professor position in the US.

Our Ideal Candidate

As our ideal candidate for a Lecturer (Level B) role, you will have:

  • A PhD in Chemical Engineering or a related field
  • Demonstrated record of high-quality teaching in Chemical Engineering courses, across a variety of contexts
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement in teaching performance through practice, feedback and reflection
  • Demonstrated active and effective record of contribution to supervision of honours and HDR students, as measured in contributions from supervised students in journal publications, conference presentations, and industry cooperation within Chemical Engineering and related disciplines
  • Exemplified engagement and mentoring skills towards early career academics and researchers
  • Demonstrated ability to innovate research programs in the fields related to Chemical engineering
  • Strong history of internationally peer-reviewed publications in high-ranking refereed journals in the categories of Chemical Engineering

As our ideal candidate for a Senior Lecturer (Level C) role, you will have all the above as well as:

  • Demonstrated leadership in teaching and research, including research training and supervision
  • Demonstrated ability to develop innovative research programs in research fields related to Chemical Engineering
  • Demonstrated national recognition and a developing international profile for research in their field, with a strong track record of publications in Q1 peer-reviewed journals in Chemical Engineering and related fields of research.
  • Demonstrated capacity to apply for and successfully obtain external research funds, and to deliver with these funds research outcomes that yield new insights and opportunities. This typically is exemplified by a record of contributions as a lead chief investigator and/or other clearly exemplified independent roles in larger, collaborative projects.

What We Can Offer

This is a full-time, continuing position at Academic level B or C.

As a Level B, the full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range AUD 99,542.80 - AUD 118,206.73, plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range AUD 116,465.08 - AUD 138,301.87.

As a Level C, the full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range AUD 121,939.50 - AUD 140,603.43, plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range AUD 142,669.22 - AUD 164,506.01.

Our Selection Process

As part of the Selection Process, applicants shortlisted for interview will be required to present a seminar and mock lecture to members of the school community prior to their scheduled interview. Research seminars and lecture topics will be provided with adequate notice to shortlisted candidates.
