In the Faculty of Science and Technology, the X-ray tomography group at the chair of Physics aims to fill an open position for a

PhD candidate (m/f)

(salary category 13 TV-L)

in part time (50%), for a period of 3 years, starting from the 1st April 2020. The place of employment will be Hamburg with periodic stays at the University of Siegen. The confirmation period is subject to the provisions of the German act on temporary employment in higher education (“Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz”). The successful candidate will participate in the project “X-ray diffraction with high spatial resolution”.

About the project:

The aim of the project is to further develop synchrotron-based X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques that provide high spatial resolution (<10 μm) for the determination of residual micro-stress in technical materials used in common mechanical components.

Tasks:

The tasks include
  • development of a frame work for numerical simulations of XRD
  • implementation and commissioning of a goniometer at beamline P06 at PETRA III
  • performing experiments with collaborators in the area of XRD with high spatial resolution
  • development of new strategies and data analysis techniques for XRD with high spatial resolution
  • the teaching obligation is 2 hours per semester week, which will be performed at the University of Siegen

The position is intended to facilitate your academic or artistic qualification (German PhD). You will have the opportunity within the framework of your tasks.

Employment requirements:

You have:
  • a diploma or master’s degree in Physics (or related subjects) with an excellent final mark
  • experience with X-ray experiments
  • profound knowledge in X-ray science and/or solid state physics
  • experience in using scientific programming languages (Python, MATLAB, C++ or similar)
In addition:
  • English skills
  • the ability to do team-work in an international scientific collaboration
  • experience with the development of scientific instruments
