PhD Fellowship in Impactites and Meteorite Dating at GLOBE Institute

Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences
University of Copenhagen

We are offering a PhD fellowship in impactites and dating of impact cratering commencing on 1 November 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Our group and research

The successful candidate will be part of a multidisciplinary group of specialists in impactites, dating of impact cratering, marine geology, and Quaternary geology. The candidate will be based in the Quaternary Group at the Section for GeoGenetics at GLOBE Institute but part of the PhD is planned to be conducted at other research institutions in France and the United States.

Project description

In 2016, our group discovered the Hiawatha impact crater under the Greenland Ice Sheet. The impact crater is essentially undated, but it has been inferred to be younger than 2.4–3 Ma and potentially as young as the last ice age. The PhD student will use different methods to date the Hiawatha crater directly using Ar-Ar dating of impact melts, or indirectly by identification of fall-out material ejected at the time of impact into terrestrial and marine sedimentary archives of known age in NW Greenland. Another part of the project is to study impactite samples found in 2019 in front of the hidden impact crater.

As part of the PhD training it will be possible to take courses in minerology, petrology and isotope geochemistry along with more specialised courses in impactites and dating of impact structures. The selected candidate will also have the opportunity to work with internationally renowned specialists in the field from Denmark, France, and the United States.
