The Department of Bioscience Engineering in the Faculty of Science is looking for three full-time (100%) doctoral scholarship holders (PhD students) in the field of bioscience engineering.

Position

  • You work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis in the field of bioscience engineering.
  • You publish scientific articles related to the research project.
  • You carry out a limited number of teaching, research and service support tasks for the department of bioscience engineering.

Profile

  • You hold a master’s degree in bioscience engineering, related discipline in engineering and/or science, or a master’s degree in connection to the research lines in the department. Candidates that obtain their master’s degree before the start of the scholarship can also apply.
  • You can demonstrate excellent study results.
  • Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision.
  • Your research qualities are in line with the faculty, university research policies and the department of Bioscience engineering.
  • You are a driven individual, willing to actively apply for research funding for a full PhD under the supervision of a main promoter affiliated with the department of bioscience engineering, by preparing and submitting a doctoral project proposal (e.g. FWO PhD fellowship strategic basic research)
  • You can communicate fluently in English.
  • You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.
  • The research at the department focuses on several domains: urban ecology, air quality, microbial solutions, microbiome and health, nature-based climate solutions, wastewater treatment, sustainable/circular production, life cycle assessment, photoelectrocatalysis and sustainable chemistry, sensing, and/or solutions for sustainable cities. You have a strong interest in a research topic linked to one (or more) of the research groups and professors:
    • Biobased Sustainability Engineering (SUSTAIN): professoren Siegfried Vlaeminck, Sara Vicca, Roeland Samson, and Anastasia Papangelou;
    • Laboratory of Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology (LAMB): professoren Sarah Lebeer, Irina Spacova, and Dieter Vandenheuvel;
    • Antwerp engineering, photoelectrochemistry and sensing (APECS): professoren Sammy Verbruggen, Karolien De Wael, Siegfried Denys, and Tom Tytgat.

What we offer

  • We offer a doctoral scholarship for a period of one year.
  • The planned start date is 15 November 2025.
  • Your monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to the scholarship amounts for doctoral scholarship holders on the pay scales for contract research staff (Dutch: Bijzonder Academisch Personeel, BAP).
  • You will do most of your work at campus Groenenborger in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
