Are you interested in high-end technological design? Then, the Professional Doctorate in Engineering (PDEng) programme Energy and Process Technology is very interesting for you. The PDEng programme is a 2-year post-MSc technological programme with a focus on technological design. This programme at the University of Twente contains an educational part that will be followed at the University of Twente, and a design project that will be carried out in cooperation with consortium of companies gathered under the CrestCool project. The educational programme will have an in-depth and broadening character with ample attention for professional development and will be partly tailored to the design project.

Project description

Cooling is one of the most important tools we have to preserve fresh food. It works because the biological and chemical processes responsible for spoilage are slowed down at low temperatures. Meanwhile, the taste and structure of most foods is not influenced by the cold, making it a nearly universally useful process. However, cooling does take a lot of energy, with 15% of the worldwide electricity consumption being used for chilling.

The objective of the research is to develop an optimized chilling process in a meat processing plant. This will be done by balancing three important factors: rapid cooling, moisture loss and efficiency. For cooling an electrostatic sprays of water charged to certain level will be used. The design part will be performed with application of CFD model developed for electrostatic spray-assisted cooling. Ansys Fluent and UDFs functions will be applied. An Eulerian-Lagrangian approach will be utilized to predict the flow of continuous and discrete phases. Numerical results will be validated with available literature and experiments performed at facilities of project partners. Prediction and designing of an optimal cooling conditions is the main target of the project.


  • Upgrading of the existing numerical model for electrostatic spray cooling
  • Validation of the model with laboratory and full scale experiments on electrostatic evaporating sprays
  • Designing of an operating window and flow parameters for an optimized transfer yield

Your profile

We are searching for the best MSc graduated in the field of Thermal Engineering, Fluid Dynamics, Chemical Engineering, Energy Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Food Technology or related discipline with a demonstrable affinity with design and multidisciplinary assignments. Besides, it is important that you can work in a team, have good communication skills, have a sound project approach, and speak and writes fluent English. You must have the ambition and talent to accelerate in finding solutions / creating designs for complex technological issues with a multidisciplinary character.

Previous international mobility, experience in the field of CFD, (meat/food) cooling, electrostatics and sprays is welcome. An interview will be part of the selection procedure.
