PhD Position in Radiation Tolerant CMOS Optical and Wireline Communication Circuits
Catholic University of Leuven

This PhD research project is in cooperation between KU Leuven and CERN to explore new techniques for radiation hardened integrated communication systems for particle accelerators and detectors. KU Leuven has a strong international position in radiation hardening by design of CMOS integrated circuits and is part of the CMS experiment at CERN. The PhD will be carried out physically at CERN (Switzerland), under supervision of KU Leuven academic staff.

PhD position in the field of radiation hard microelectronics for optical and wireline communication systems. The aim is to research new circuits and architectures on phase locked loops, receivers, transmitters and SERDES topologies aiming for 56 Gbps PAM4 optical links. The work involves conceptual design, circuit implementation and testing (incl. radiation) of the developed circuits. The PhD candidate will be free to further chose and refine the specific research topic in consultation with her/his supervisor based on her/his background and interests. Expected starting date is January 2021.

  • A background in electronic engineering, microelectronics, computer science or physics
  • Master degree with cum laude
  • Applicants must be a national of a CERN member state in order to comply with funding regulations

  • PhD programme though KU Leuven doctoral school
  • Opportunity to develop integrated circuits in deep sub-um technologies
