PhD Project - Direct ammonia synthesis by alkaline membrane based electrolysis

An attractive annual scholarship of $33,000 AUD is available for a PhD student to conduct research in the area of electrochemical synthesis of ammonia. The research will be conducted under the joint supervision of researchers from the Department of Chemical Engineering at Monash University (Dr. Parama Chakraborty Banerjee and Prof. Raman Singh) and CSIRO (Dr. Sarbjit Giddey).

Ammonia is produced via the Haber-Bosch process that requires high energy input (~500°C and 150-300 bar) and results in carbon-emission (releases about half of the UK CO2 every year), and consumes about 2% of the global fossil fuel energy. Based on the energy content of ammonia (5.2 MWh per tonne), more than 50% of the energy is lost in the synthesis process alone. Therefore, there is enormous potential for reducing energy losses in the synthesis process by developing an alternative synthesis route, and utilising renewable energy so the process is emission-less. This project aims to directly synthesize ammonia using an alkaline membrane based electrolysis.

A strong background and interest in materials science, electrochemistry and catalyst synthesis are highly desirable. Applicants must show excellent communication and inter-personal skills, and the ability to conduct self-motivated research. International applicants should hold a Masters Degree in the relevant research areas and have a record of publishing their research in mainstream scientific journals.

Note: applicants who already hold a PhD will not be considered.

Candidate Requirements

Applicants will be considered provided they fulfil the criteria for PhD admission at Monash University and demonstrate excellent research capability. Details of the relevant requirements are available at http://www.monash.edu/graduate-research/future-students/apply

Submit an Expression of Interest

EOIs shall comprise:

  • A cover letter that includes a brief statement of the applicant's suitability

  • A curriculum vitae, including a list of published works

  • A full statement of academic record, supported by scanned copies of relevant certified documentation

  • Contact details of two academic referees

  • Evidence of English-language proficiency (international applicants only)
