Through its dual mission of teaching and research, the FSTM seeks to generate and disseminate knowledge and train new generations of responsible citizens, in order to better understand, explain and advance society and environment we live in.

The University of Luxembourg and ArcelorMittal created the ArcelorMittal Chair of Steel Construction at the University of Luxembourg. To support this Chair, the University is looking for a PhD student (doctoral candidate) in Engineering Science.

 Your Role...

The PhD student (doctoral researcher) will work under the guidance of a professor on a research theme and will also contribute to education in a certain extent. She/he should finish the work with a doctoral degree in engineering science.

Foreseen research 

RegainSteel project:

The project is through the ArcelorMittal Chair of Steel Construction, under the collaboration between the University of Luxembourg and ArcelorMittal. It deals with the investigation of structural steel elements for reuse in a circular economy and works at the material level by using destructive- and nondestructive steel material test and measurement methods. These procedures will allow for determining the steel properties for reuse in a new construction. Besides metallurgical and experimental work in the laboratory and on-site, the use of Artificial Intelligence will help to optimize the process and make more feasible use of nondestructive measurements.

 What we expect from you…

  • Diploma or Master’s degree in Civil Structural Engineering or Mechanical Engineering
  • A deepened knowledge in steel structural analysis as well as basic metallurgical knowledge
  • A finished education in Welding Engineering or an equivalent degree would be beneficial
  • Open mind to the Artificial Intelligence tools
  • Willingness for laboratory and analytical work is necessary
  • Willingness to enroll as PhD-student at UL
  • Language: English at B2 level, additional German or French is seen as an asset

  • Contract Type: Fixed Term Contract 36 Month (extendable up to 48 months if required)

The yearly gross salary for every PhD at the UL is EUR 38979 (full time)
