PhD student position in 5G-Based Traffic Junction Control for Connected Autonomous Vehicles

At the department of Electrical Engineering research and education are performed in the areas of Communication and Antenna systems, Systems and Control, Computer vision, Signal processing and Biomedical engineering, and Electric Power Engineering. Our knowledge is of use everywhere where there is advanced technology with integrated electronics. We work with challenges for a sustainable future in society of today, for example in the growing demands concerning efficient systems for communications and electrification.

The department provides about 100 courses, of which most are included in the Master’s Programs ”Biomedical Engineering”, “Electric Power Engineering”, ”Systems, Control and Mechatronics” and ”Communication Engineering”.

Information about the research
We invite applications for one Ph. D. position in Control for Intelligent Transportation Systems. The position is announced at the Mechatronics Group of the Electrical Engineering Department, where we are engaged in both fundamental and applied research related to intelligent transportation systems. Ongoing research projects in this field focus, among others, on the design and the experimental validation of control algorithms for connected autonomous vehicles.

The successful candidate will join a team of post-docs and Ph. D. students, engaged in neighboring research, and is expected to contribute to the design of control algorithms for systems, subject to state and input constraints, communicating through lossy channels with limited capacity. If possible and relevant, the achieved results will be demonstrated through experiments on full-scale vehicles and in collaboration with our industrial partners.

Major responsibilities
The working time of a Ph. D. student is mainly devoted to research. Undergraduate teaching duties, not exceeding 20% of the working time, may include supervision of MSc students. 

Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.

Qualifications
Candidates shall have a Master’s Degree or equivalent in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Applied Math or in a related discipline. A successful applicant should have a strong background in control theory and optimization. Programming skills in Matlab are required and in C/C++ are welcome. A genuine interest and curiosity in the subject, excellent oral and written English communication skills are needed.
