This position is part of the Post Doctoral Fellows Association and has an initial appointment of two years, with the possibility of renewal.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers students the opportunity to pursue an exceptional, high-quality education in one of Canada's largest mechanical engineering departments.

Position Summary

Professor Amit Kumar, Canada Research Chair in Assessment of Energy Systems (Tier-1) in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alberta, invites applications for a full-time Postdoctoral Fellow/Research Associate position.

The successful candidate will join an active group of researchers working in the areas of energy and environmental systems engineering supported by industry and government. The candidate will also have an opportunity to contribute to multi-country collaborative projects focused on addressing the challenges of future energy systems. This position will allow the candidate to work collaboratively with decision-makers in developing information for investment decision-making and policy formulation.

The position is initially for two years and has the possibility of being extended. The position is available immediately, and applications will be reviewed as received. Only those of interest will be contacted.

Description of the Position

The position focuses on modeling decarbonization pathways for fossil fuel-based energy conversion systems, specifically in the conversion and processing of oil and natural gas to other forms of energy and carbon capture storage and utilization.

We are looking for an individual with research experience in energy and environmental systems engineering and process modeling.


Duties

  • Conduct research in the decarbonization of energy pathways.

  • Develop process models of energy conversion pathways.

  • Prepare manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals.

  • Prepare technical reports for industrial and government partners.

  • Contribute to the preparation of proposals for funding agencies.

  • Work with junior students on various research projects.

  • Contribute to the research group as needed.


Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD in a relevant engineering discipline with emphasis on energy systems.

  • Prior experience developing process models for the estimation of the viability of energy systems.

  • Experience with modeling tools (e.g., Aspen Plus).

  • Proven ability to work independently.

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills; proficiency in English.

  • Open to Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada, and foreign students.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Research experience in energy and environmental systems engineering.

  • Interest and experience in process modeling.
