Postdoctoral Position In Algorithms

Postdoctoral Research Fellow position

At the Department of Informatics there is a vacancy for a postdoctoral research fellow position within algorithms. The position is for a fixed term of 3 years, financed by the National Security Authority.

The Department of informatics has seven research groups that deliver research and education at a high international level in algorithms, bioinformatics, information security, machine learning, optimization, programming theory, and visualization. All the groups are successfully co-funded by research grants, among others by the European Research Council (ERC). The department offers state of the art education at Bachelor, Master and PhD levels.

About the project/work tasks:

All employees are expected to contribute to excellence through high quality research and teaching. The position is in the Algorithms research group. This research group works with different approaches for coping with NP-hard problems, such as parameterized complexity and width parameters of graphs, where the development and analysis of efficient algorithms is done through a focus on structural aspects of the input.

The position is part of a large national project, which has a focus on computationally hard problems that can build the foundation for next generation asymmetric crypto algorithms. For next generation secure algorithms it is crucial that classical complexity analysis is taken into consideration.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

  • Applicants must hold a Norwegian PhD or an equivalent degree in computer science or mathematics, or must have submitted his/her doctoral thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded.
  • Applicants must have a background in algorithms
  • We seek applicants with an interest in applications of computational complexity to hard problems of potential use for crypto systems.
  • Experience from research in the field of parameterized complexity is an advantage.
  • Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner, and have the ability to cooperate with others.
  • Applicants must have excellent skills in oral and written English
  • A good command of the Norwegian language is an advantage
  • Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized. Research experience, ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates.

About the position of postdoctoral research fellow:

The postdoctoral position is a fixed term position with the primary objective of qualifying the appointee for work in top academic positions. Depending on the qualifications and background of the appointee, the employment period may be increased up to 4 years. Teaching and other components will in such cases be added to the work task of the position. The department will fund the extra months. Individuals may not be hired for more than one fixed-term period as a postdoctoral research fellow at the same institution.

Upon appointment, applicants must submit a project proposal for the qualifying work including a work schedule. For postdoctoral research fellow positions associated with externally financed projects, the completion of the project proposal for the qualifying work will take place in consultation with the project/centre manager. It is a requirement that the project is completed in the course of the period of employment.

We can offer:

  • Exciting development opportunities as part of your role in a strong professional environment
  • Salary at pay grade 59 - 65 (code 1352 / pay range 24, alternative 3) according to the state salary scale upon appointment. This currently amounts to an annual salary of NOK 515 200 - 576 100 before taxes. Further promotions are made according to length of service. For particularly highly qualified applicants, a higher salary may be considered
  • Enrolment in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund
  • Good welfare benefits

Your application must include:

  • A brief account of the applicant's research interests and motivation for applying for the position.
  • The names and contact information for two referees. One of these should be the main advisor from the PhD programme.
  • CV
  • Transcripts and diplomas and official confirmation that the doctoral thesis has been submitted
  • Relevant certificates/references
  • List of any works of a scientific nature (publication list)
  • Publications (as applicable)

The application and appendices with certified translations into English or a Scandinavian language must be uploaded at Jobbnorge by 03.05.2019
