Postdoctoral Position in Chirped-Pulse Millimeter Wave
Argonne National Laboratory Chemical Sciences and Engineering Division
United States

The Chemical Sciences and Engineering Division is seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee who will, under the guidance of a supervisor, be involved in chirped-pulse Fourier transform millimeter-wave spectroscopy for dynamics and kinetics studies.

Our research is aimed at understanding the quantized energy transfer within molecular systems in the gas phase and discovering the fundamental mechanisms of chemical reactions.

This position will involve a considerable amount of laboratory work, and this work will make use of a variety of experimental techniques, including the chirped-pulse millimeter-wave spectroscopy, pyrolysis, and laser-induced photolysis.

Part of the time will be devoted to the development of new broadband spectroscopic methods and chemical reactors. The work will also include some computer programming to facilitate the acquisition and processing of spectroscopic data, and the automated assignment of pure rotational spectra. Under the guidance of a supervisor, conducts experiments and evaluates and interprets data.

Interacts and performs collaborative research with other researchers. Remains abreast of progress in pertinent fields. Analyzes data, prepares manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed publications, and makes presentations at scientific meetings.

Position Requirements

Comprehensive knowledge of some area of molecular spectroscopy Considerable knowledge of gas-phase chemical physics, chemical reaction dynamics and kinetics Considerable experience in experimental vacuum and molecular beam techniques, microwave or millimeter-wave spectroscopy, including in assignment and analysis of rotational spectra Good experience in laser spectroscopy Good programming skills for interfacing scientific equipment This level of knowledge is typically achieved through a formal education at the Ph.D. degree level with zero to three years of experience or equivalent in the scientific application of this knowledge and practical laboratory experience

This position description documents the general nature and level of work but is not intended to be a comprehensive list of all activities, duties and responsibilities required of job incumbent. Consequently, job incumbent may be required to perform other duties as assigned.
