Postdoctoral Position in Digitalization in Construction
University of Gothenburg

Postdoctor in Digitalization in Construction

Diary id: PAR 2020/332
Employment level: Fixed term
Location: Computer Science and Engineering
Apply by: 2020-04-06

Located in Gothenburg – Sweden’s second-largest city – the department is surrounded by a vibrant ecosystem of software-intensive companies, such as NCC Sverige AB, WSP Sverige AB, Volvo Cars and Volvo AB, Ericsson, ABB, Boeing, and SAAB Aeronautics. The department is connected to three science parks in Gothenburg for industrial collaborations in fields including intelligent structures, vehicles and transport systems, mobile internet, energy, nanotechnology, and life sciences. Alumni and members of the department have also created many startups, including revolutionary companies such as Spotify.

With over 20 faculty members, the Division of Software Engineering is arguably one of the largest software-engineering institutes world-wide, conducting research at the highest international level in topics such as model-driven engineering, testing, software product lines, empirical software engineering, requirements engineering, autonomic computing, and cloud computing. The division has hosted past international conferences such as ICSE 2018, SPLC 2018, ICSA 2017, and REFSQ 2016.  For industrial research, the division hosts the Software Center, an associated institute with a network of five universities and ten global companies including Siemens, Axis, and Jeppesen.

The successful candidate will conduct multi-disciplinary research under the supervision of Dr. Eric Knauss and work in tight collaboration with world-class researchers in the Software Engineering Division at Chalmers and University of Gothenburg, at the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering at Chalmers, and potentially at the Interaction Design Division at Chalmers and University of Gothenburg. Within the Software Engineering division, the candidate will be part of a strong Requirements Engineering group, with five full-time faculty members and several PhD students.  The candidate will join the division the same year as several other PhD students with related topics.

Subject area

Software Engineering, Requirements Engineering

Subject area description

Digitalization changes the way of working in many areas. In this project, we aim to support digitalization in smart build environments: By embedding sensors into a construction (e.g. a bridge), valuable data can be generated to facilitate maintenance of such constructions. Machine learning can be used to identify parts of the construction that are particularly affected by use and wear. Smart visualization of such data can help inspections.

The postdoc position aims to further strengthen a strong multi-disciplinary project team to which a successful candidate will bring software engineering expertise. The project aims to present a showcase of digitalization of the built environment (here: the construction of physical infrastructure such as buildings or bridges). From a requirements engineering research perspective, this is a great opportunity to better understand how digitalization and machine learning can affect long term operation and maintenance of the built environment (bridges, tunnels, buildings, etc). How can misuse be avoided, preventive maintenance be facilitated, and the risk of closing a weakened structure too late be minimized, especially when the capabilities of self-analyses of the structure will change over its long-live time? Can the structure itself be made “aware” of its requirements and constraints, e.g. in terms of who has ownership of data and/or decisions? How will a requirements framework look for such self-aware structures that increasingly become part of our daily life in smart cities?

Job assignments

This position is a fulltime position for two years as a Postdoc at the Software Engineering Division at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. The position requires the conduction of high-quality research, with publication at relevant peer-reviewed venues.  The candidate is expected to develop their own scientific concepts and communicate the results of their research verbally and in writing. Research conducted will be supervised by well-reputed senior researchers at the involved department. Beyond the typical tasks of a young researcher such as reading, reviewing and writing research publications, conducting empirical studies, performing data analysis, the candidate has the following tasks:

  • Drive forward the development of an information system for digitalization of the built environment, incl. developing appropriate visualization of data and making it available through a mobile app on premises (e.g. augmented reality)
  • Support developing a method for engineering requirements for digitalization projects in the built environment.
  • Support teaching on Bachelor or Master level, incl. supervision of student theses.
  • Contribute to and being an active member of the growing requirements engineering research group.

The qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.

You should have achieved a doctoral degree by the application deadline to qualify for a position as postdoctoral researcher at the University of Gothenburg. The doctoral thesis shall be in a relevant area according to the specific position stated in the advertisement, for example software engineering, requirements engineering, or interaction design. Since a position as postdoctor aims to give new holders of the doctorate the opportunity mainly to strengthen and develop their scholarly proficiency, we aim for those who have a doctoral degree not older than 3 years counting from last date of application.

The person who has acquired a doctorate earlier may also be given primary consideration if there are special reasons. Special reasons are considered to be a leave of absence due to illness, service in the total defense, commissions of trust within professional and student organisations or parental leave or other similar circumstances

Technical programming skills related to web or mobile apps and data visualization are required. The candidate is expected to have good English skills in reading and writing.

Further desirable but not mandatory criteria include previous multi-disciplinary research experience, ideally shown through publications in international conferences and journals on relevant topics.

Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 – 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.

Type of employment: Fixed-term employment, 24 months, central agreement
