Information about the project
Research has shown that the indoor environment affects people’s health and wellbeing, but how do various building characteristics, occupant factors and combinations of them contribute to this? What kinds of buildings provide the most comfortable and healthy indoor environments? What is the impact on energy demand from different comfort practices?

This project aims to understand the complex interactions between indoor climate, building and user characteristics and users’ perception of their indoor environment in order to provide information on what it means and how to create comfortable and healthy buildings. This will be achieved with the use of existing, extensive housing stock survey data. The research involves processing and analysis of datasets, statistical modelling and development of methods for the assessment of building performance from a user perception perspective.

Information about the division and department
The project runs in the Division of Building Services Engineering (BSE) of the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering. Research within BSE considers first of all the functional requirements in buildings (air quality, thermal, acoustic and visual comfort) and the design, dimensioning and control of technical systems (heating, ventilation, air conditioning, i.e. HVAC) to meet these functional requirements. To some extent it also deals with the external systems that supply buildings with electricity and heat, as well as external systems to remove heat from buildings. Our research in the Division of Building Services Engineering aims to ensure a suitable indoor environment for a range of activities in buildings with a strong focus on energy efficiency (same benefit with less use of resources).

Major responsibilities
We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher to work in our research project which focuses on the relationships between indoor environment, user perception, behaviour, building systems and energy use. Involvement in other projects in indoor environment and energy within the Division is also possible.

Your major responsibility as a postdoc is to conduct research independently and in collaboration with others.  The position also includes teaching on undergraduate and master's levels as well as supervising master's and/or PhD students to a certain extent. Another important aspect involves collaboration within academia and with society at large. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector. You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing in English.

Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to 1 year with possibility for +1.

Qualifications
Required qualifications:

  • a PhD degree from an internationally recognised institution, preferably in the field of building science or in a research field closely related to the project description.

  • experience with statistical analysis of large datasets and data analysis tools (e.g. R, SPSS, matlab).

  • excellent scientific skills, as demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications.

  • high level of written and spoken English. 

Desired but not mandatory qualifications:

  • Experience from misc. building simulation tools (e.g. IDA ICE, Energyplus).

  • Experience from measurements of indoor environmental variables and thermal comfort field surveys.
