Postdoctoral position in Secure Control Systems

Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our mission is to pursue top-quality research and education and to interact constructively with society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has 46.000 students, 7.300 employees and a turnover of SEK 7.3 billion.

The Department of Electrical Engineering has a leading position in research and education. The Department has an international environment with about 130 employees at the Ångström Laboratory.

The successful applicant will join the Division of Signals and Systems. The Division conducts leading research over different areas, which include signal processing, control engineering, cybersecurity of control systems, wireless communication, energy harvesting devices, and pedagogy and didactics in engineering.

The Postdoc will be part of the research group focused on cybersecurity of control systems. Our group develops new theory and methodologies that support the analysis and design of secure and reliable control systems in safety-critical applications, such as. for example, water management, electric power systems, and medical treatment systems. Information about our research group and ongoing projects is available at this website

Project description: The research project for the advertised position will be within the areas of control engineering, cybersecurity, and reinforcement learning. The application area will be focused on digital control systems operated over communication networks that may be subject to cyber-attacks. As a member of a cross-disciplinary team, you will contribute to providing solutions for enhancing the security and resilience of control systems.

The position will have a focus on developing novel system analysis and design methodologies that jointly consider the impact and detectability of attacks under uncertainty, taking inspiration from model-based approaches related to optimal fault detection and optimal robust control, and from data-driven solutions such as reinforcement learning. The developed methods shall support the design of anomaly detection and control algorithms for improved security and resilience, which will be validated on experimental testbeds and though numerical simulations.

Duties: To conduct original research within the area of secure control systems. The duties include theoretical analysis, algorithm design and implementation, as well as numerical simulations and documentation of the future research results in the form of journal articles, conference papers, and technical reports. Participation in supervision and teaching at undergraduate and graduate level, as well as supervision of doctoral students, is also included in the position.

Requirements: To qualify for an employment as a postdoctor you must have a PhD degree or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in electrical engineering with specialization in automatic control, machine learning, or a related area. The PhD degree must have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application deadline. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

Good skills in spoken and written English are a requirement.

Documented research experience with high-quality publications in the project’s research area. Significant weight will be given to programming skills, mathematical knowledge and previous research in automatic control or a related area, for instance, fault detection, robust control, optimization theory, machine learning, or reinforcement learning.

Additional qualifications: Other important personal qualities are openness to interdisciplinary research, creativity, correctness, and a structured approach. The selection of applicants will be based on their ability to:

  • independently push their work forward
  • be able to collaborate with others
  • have a professional approach and
  • analyze and work on complex issues

Following the eligibility requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal characteristics and personal fitness for the role.

Application: Please use the link below. The application should include all of the following items:

  • CV including your relevant academic and professional merits,
  • A cover letter (at most 2 pages) describing yourself, your motivation for applying to this position, your qualifications and research interests, future goals, a motivation of why you are interested in the position and how your research experience is well-suited to the position.
  • A short Research Statement about the project’s research topic (max 2 pages).

Certified copies of degree certificates and grade transcripts, including their translation to English or Swedish if they are in another language.

  • Publication list.
  • Representative publications and/or technical reports of the applicants own authorship (no more than 8 pages per publication). In case of larger documents (e.g., a PhD thesis report), submit instead a short summary and a link to the full report.
  • Contact information for at least two references. - One recommendation letter from one of the reference persons.

Applications may be submitted by candidates that have not fully completed the Doctoral degree (or equivalent), however all applicants should state the earliest feasible starting date of employment, and they should indicate the expected graduation date.

Salary: Individual salary.
