Description of the Workplace

The position is based in the Division of Electromagnetics and Nanoelectronics at the Department of Electrical and Information Technology.

The division comprises:

  • 15 senior researchers
  • Approximately 20 doctoral students

The division maintains extensive collaboration with industry.

Research activities include:

  • Semiconductor devices
  • Nanotechnology
  • Electronics
  • Computational electromagnetics

Subject and Project Description

The project focuses on fabrication and investigation of advanced transistors based on ultra-wide-bandgap semiconductor materials within the III-nitride system.

Key focus:

  • AlGaN- and AlScN-based High-Electron-Mobility Transistors (HEMTs)
  • RF (radio-frequency) applications
  • Power electronics applications

Work includes:

  • Device design and fabrication in cleanroom environment
  • Electrical characterization
  • Device modelling

The research is conducted in collaboration with:

  • Other doctoral students in nitride-based devices
  • Researchers in material growth and characterization
  • Departments of Solid State Physics and Synchrotron Radiation Research

The project is connected to:

  • Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation (KAW)
  • Competence Centre for III-Nitride Technology (C3NiT)
  • Chips Joint Undertaking (Chips JU) Wide-Bandgap Pilot Line

Work Duties

You will primarily devote yourself to doctoral studies, including:

  • Participation in research projects
  • Doctoral courses, seminars, and conferences

Research focus:

  • Fabrication and characterization of nitride-based HEMTs
  • Integration of ultra-wide-bandgap materials such as AlN and AlScN

Additional responsibilities:

  • Collaboration on fabrication and characterization
  • Collaboration with materials scientists and epitaxy specialists
  • Publishing in peer-reviewed journals
  • Presenting at international conferences
  • Doctoral-level coursework in semiconductor physics, electronics, quantum physics
  • Teaching and departmental duties (max 20%)

Qualifications

Admission Requirements

Applicants must meet one of the following:

  • Second-cycle qualification, OR
  • At least 240 credits including 60 second-cycle credits, OR
  • Equivalent knowledge obtained elsewhere

Specific Requirements

  • At least 60 second-cycle credits in Electrical Engineering-related subjects, OR
  • MSc in Engineering in:
    • Biomedical Engineering
    • Computer Science
    • Electrical Engineering
    • Engineering Mathematics
    • Nanoengineering
    • Engineering Physics
    • Information and Communication Engineering

Additional Requirements

  • Knowledge of semiconductor physics/technology
  • Master’s degree in semiconductor electronics or related field
  • Ability to work independently and solve research problems
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to collaborate
  • Very good English (spoken and written)

Other Qualifications

  • Cleanroom experience
  • Experience with GaN-based devices
  • High-voltage or RF characterization experience
  • Device fabrication and/or modelling experience

Employment Conditions

  • Fixed-term full-time position
  • Start: As soon as possible, no later than 31 December 2026
  • Duration: 4 years (may be extended for teaching duties)
  • Regulated under Swedish Higher Education Ordinance
