Description

A Postdoctoral Scholar position in Synthetic Biology is open at the laboratory of Melik Demirel at the Pennsylvania State University. The Demirel Lab studies fundamental structure-property relationships in protein materials and applies these studies to diverse problems including advanced fibers and textiles, thermal diodes, and photonic devices. This position involves design, implementation, and data analysis for the directed evolution of protein materials and requires the supervision of graduate students and the co-authoring of journal articles. A successful applicant must have a Ph.D. in molecular biology, biochemistry, or a related field, with proven independent and collaborative research experience involving gene and gene-library design and construction, as well as high-throughput protein expression and purification. The ideal candidate will have a strong background and publication record in the design or engineering of protein materials with an emphasis on novel transport and optical properties. Penn State’s College of Engineering strives to build a welcoming, inclusive, and supportive environment for students, staff, and faculty. We rely on the expertise, sensitivity and commitment of an inclusive faculty to enhance diversity, seek equity, and create a welcoming environment within our community. We are committed to nurturing a learning and working environment that respects differences in culture, age, gender, race, ethnicity, physical ability, sexual orientation, and religious affiliation. In welcoming every candidate, we strive to meet the needs of professional families by actively assisting with partner-placement needs. We are inspiring change and impacting tomorrow. A complete application includes a cover letter describing research and mentoring experience, a CV, and contact information for at least two professional references is required.
