Job Summary

Responsible for overall leadership and administration of the Department, including recruitment and development of faculty, budget control, staff supervision, curriculum development and student advisement. Represents Department to other units of the university (departments, colleges, student affairs, etc.) as well as external stakeholders (alumni, employers, and professional community).



  • Accreditation: Ensure that all Programs are accredited
  • Budget: Make budgetary decisions, including but not limited to budgetary needs, keep expenses within allocated budget
  • Program Chairs: Identify, nominate, support, and supervise Program Chairs including but not limited to TA hires, scheduling, Program advisory committees etc.
  • Staff: Hire, support, train and supervise office staff
  • Overall Management: Troubleshoot departmental issue including but not limited to supervising responses to all student, faculty and staff related issues.
  • Teaching labs: Maintain functional and safe teaching labs


Faculty Related:

  • Faculty Communication: Communicate with department faculty through regularly scheduled department and program meetings and other means
  • Faculty Evaluation: Provide annual evaluations for teaching, research, and service
  • Faculty Hires: Supervise faculty searches; negotiate with possible faculty hires including but not limited to salaries and start-up packages
  • Faculty Service: Identify and assign program/department/college/university service activities for all faculty
  • Faculty Support: Support faculty in research and teaching endeavors including but not limited to travel, securing equipment, GSA hires



  • Create an inclusive climate among all department faculty and staff
  • Provide vision in research, teaching and faculty hiring
  • Create and execute a department plan for growing research and improving teaching
  • Work with the Office of Development to raise endowments/gifts
  • Work with Enrollment Management to improve student recruiting where needed
  • Set departmental research and teaching goals with faculty buy-in
  • Work with the Dean of COES to create and execute a Program/Department visibility plan to improve Program/Departmental ratings

The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report

In compliance with the Clery Act, the University annually provides a report to each student and current employee, as well as to prospective employees and students, that provides a detailed disclosure of information regarding campus security practices (including Emergency Response Plan, Timely Warnings, Emergency  Notifications, Missing Persons, fire safety policies, fire prevention data, and Crime Log policies), as well as crime and fire-related incident statistics for the preceding year. Official Transcripts

Official transcripts of all collegiate work must be sent directly from the attended institution to the Office of Human Resources prior to the first day of employment. All international degrees must have a course-by-course official evaluation and translation sent to the Human Resources Office directly from an evaluation company affiliated with the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services, Inc. (NACES).
