Faculty Architecture and the Built Environment


Since its foundation 110 years ago, the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment has built up a solid international reputation for training architects, urban planners and designers, as well as for its research portfolio and coaching of PhD candidates. With around 2600 students and 500 staff members, with around 230 FTEs devoted to academic positions, our faculty is one of the largest of Delft University of Technology and one of the most prestigious architecture and the built environment faculties globally. Traditionally, the faculty has prioritised high-quality training in design and research in the field of the built environment. Over 40 chairs cover a wide range of academic areas in design, process and technology, which together cover the entire field of the built environment.


About us


The department of Management in the Built Environment (MBE) of this Faculty works towards a sustainable built environment where the interests of the end user and other stakeholders are key. MBE focuses on solutions for the development and management of buildings, portfolios and urban areas and the education to the next generation of managers in the built environment.



We are recruiting an Assistant Professor to strengthen and extend our team for research and education activities in the field of Real Estate Management. The candidate will join a highly ranked department, faculty and university and work in an international team of highly committed and successful academics in Real Estate Management (REM). The REM group emphasises on the user perspective, designing strategies and tools to implement this perspective in Real Estate Management. Next to that, our research focuses on the lifecycle of the built environment at all scales and the dynamics of those cycles. Analyses are based on sustainability, life cycle costs and total cost of use and ownership. In our research, we have a design thinking approach, developing decision support strategies and tools for actors who shape or influence the built environment, like investors, developers, designers, engineers, owners and users. The work has strong ties with other groups and research topics within the department, namely real estate economics, urban development management, and design and construction management.



The aim of the new position is to enhance the profile of our teaching and research, with a specific focus on research by design. The candidate is expected to teach bachelor and master courses (BSc Bouwkunde, MSc track Management in the Built Environment (MBE) and (in due time) take on course coordination and course development tasks. The candidate will also be playing an active role in initiating and contributing to research bids and funded projects, supervising PhD candidates and writing academic publications. This will require close collaboration with scholars in the department of MBE and/or the faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment, as well as with experts in different domains outside the university.




The selection procedure for this position involves a 1st round mid/end July which includes an interview with the selectioncommittee and a presentation of max 30 min. about your vision on research and education. The second round (end August/early September) consists of a 2nd interview with the selectioncommittee and Trial lecture to a studentaudience.
We aim at a start date in October 2019.



The candidate should:

hold a PhD degree in real estate management or related fields;

have relevant international post-doc experience or equivalent experience;

have excellent knowledge in real estate management and architecture and have affinity with building economy;

have excellent academic skills, as demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications;

have strong (proven) didactic skills and teaching experience in BSc and MSc education;

preferably have experience in PhD supervision and writing research proposals;

take on (teaching/research) coordination tasks and have a keen interest in education innovation;

preferably be able to communicate, write and teach in Dutch on an academic level.


Nature of job


A tenure-track position is offered for six years. Based on performance indicators agreed upon at the start of the appointment, a decision will be made by the fifth year on whether to offer you a permanent faculty position. We expect that the candidate has the potential to grow towards an Associate Professor and/or Full Professor role in the future.
