Job summary

The Department of Materials wishes to appoint a Research Associate in Biosensing who would work on the development of nanostructured materials and surfaces for applications in biosensing of disease biomarkers taking a multidisciplinary approach in materials science. The post-holder will design and fabricate innovative biomaterials to expand our portfolio and will apply advanced characterisation techniques to understand a variety of factors that define the bio-material interactions. The post-holder will be active within a vibrant and multidisciplinary environment comprising multiple projects. This post will liaise closely with researchers trained in a wide array of faculties, including nanomaterials, engineering, as well as biology (with focus areas in drug delivery, tissue engineering and diagnostics).

The Research Associate in Biosensing will design nanomaterials for biomolecular detection that output quantitative signals in presence of biomarker targets. They will use chemical biology approaches, DNA/RNA molecular biology techniques and micro-/nanofabrication strategies to develop functionalised biosensing platforms. The post holder will establish versatile characterisation protocols that can be translated to a variety of applications and will undertake the associated data analysis and interpretation.

Duties and responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

Research:

  • Design nanomaterials for biomolecular detection that output quantitative signals in presence of biomarker targets.
  • Exploit chemical biology in biosensing approaches.
  • Synthesis of organic probes/ligands and their characterisation using NMR, IR, UV-vis, fluorescence, mass spectroscopy.
  • Use DNA/RNA molecular biology techniques to develop nanomaterials for amplification, aptamers, enzymatic catalysis and nanoparticle conjugation for applications in biosensing.
  • Materials based characterisation of innovative nano/microcarriers for applications in therapeutic delivery.
  • Materials based characterisation of the interface between materials and biological environments.
  • Use state-of-the-art materials characterisation techniques to analyse the materials.
  • Undertake the associated data analysis and interpretation of data including chemometrics and multivariate analysis in the Matlab scripting environment.
  • Help the other research staff, technicians, and students in the daily management of the group laboratories and facilities.
  • To liaise with the other research staff and students working in broad areas of relevance to the research project and partner institutions.
  • To write progress reports and prepare results for publication and dissemination via journals, presentations, and the web.
  • To attend progress and management meetings as required and network with the other research groups.
  • To collaborate with industrial partners.
  • To take initiatives in the planning of research.
  • To develop any required skills and knowledge.
  • To identify and develop suitable techniques and apparatus for the collection and analysis of data.
  • To conduct data analysis.
  • To ensure the validity and reliability of data at all times.
  • To maintain accurate and complete records of all findings.
  • To write reports for submission to research sponsors.
  • To prepare material for presentation in oral and poster formats.
  • To present findings to colleagues and at conferences.
  • To draft publications and prepare them for submission to refereed journals.
  • To publish in high quality refereed journals.
  • To provide guidance to staff and students.
  • To take responsibility for organising resources and effective decision making in support of research.
  • To attend relevant workshops and conferences as necessary.

Essential requirements

Candidates/post holders will be expected to demonstrate the following:

Qualifications

  • A first degree (or equivalent) or a Masters (or equivalent) in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science, or Engineering or similar.
  • A PhD (or equivalent) in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science, or Engineering or similar.

Experience

  • Experience in nanomaterial design and synthesis for biosensing applications.
  • Experience on micro- / nanofabrication strategies to develop functionalised nanoparticles and nanostructured surfaces.
  • Experience in nanomaterial and chemical-based characterisation techniques, such as NMR, SAXS, UV-vis, microscopy and spectroscopy.
  • Experience in physicochemical characterisation techniques (e.g. Raman microspectroscopy, spectroscopy, SANS/SAXS, etc.)
  • Experience in microscopy characterisation techniques (e.g. confocal microscopy, SEM, TEM, AFM) and image analysis software (e.g. ImageJ).
  • Experience in multivariate analysis and Matlab scripts (or similar software)
  • Experience in writing papers focusing on biomaterials development and characterisation, including a number of first-authored papers in well-respected journals.

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of biomaterials for applications in biosensing.
  • Knowledge of cell and molecular biology techniques including qPCR, electrophoresis, DNA sequencing and electrochemical assays.

Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrable ability for innovation and original research.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct a detailed review of recent literature.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and apply new concepts.

Further information

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £35,477- £38,566 per annum.
