Job description

Job summary

The Department of Aeronautics is seeking a Research Assistant / Associate to conduct work in the area of High-Fidelity Simulations. The post is funded by the Commission of the European Communities (CEC).

You will focus on developing high-order tools which enable high-fidelity high-Strouhal number simulations to be conducted for investigating and reducing external aircraft noise.

This primarily arises from turbofan engines and increases substantially when installed under the wing of an aircraft. Spectral/hp element methods have already demonstrated lower computational cost for a fixed accuracy in unsteady flows/wave propagation.

You will develop computational techniques within the Nektar++ spectral/hp element framework and apply them to perform and characterise accurate CFD for several industrial test cases and noise reduction techniques.

Duties and responsibilities

Duties include:

  • Extend the Nektar++ software as necessary to achieve the objectives of the projects.
  • Set up and execute the industrial test cases.
  • Develop suitable techniques for the collection and analysis of data.
  • Assist with the analysis of data.
  • Analyse and improve the performance and scalability of the code in large-scale simulations, particularly in relation to I/O.
  • Participate in meetings of the project consortium.

Essential requirements

Those appointed at Research Associate level

Hold a PhD (or equivalent) in Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a closely related discipline.

Those appointed at Research Assistant level

Near completion of a PhD (or equivalent) in Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a closely related discipline.
