Research Assistant / Associate in Time-Resolved Spectroscopy of Emerging Semiconductor Materials
University of Cambridge
United Kingdom

Applications are invited for a Post-Doctoral Research Associate to work on time-resolved spectroscopy of emerging semiconductor materials including perovskites and perovskite-inspired materials for applications including photovoltaics, lighting, lasing and quantum devices. A key focus will be on understanding the local recombination and charge transport properties of these materials employing time-resolved techniques on the microscale, including adapting recently developed techniques in the group utilising 3D luminescence and diffusion approaches. These measured properties will be correlated with related electronic, chemical and materials microscopy characterisation approaches, providing new insight into these semiconductors and guiding elimination of power losses in devices.

The successful candidate will join the research group of Sam Stranks ( They will take on a leadership role by leading the Spectroscopy sub-group, including mentoring several PhD students within the group and managing the daily operations of the spectroscopy activities. The activities will link strongly with materials synthesis, materials/electronic characterisation and device fabrication activities within the group, and it is expected the candidate will provide contributions to a number of projects in these areas beyond their own core projects. This will include investigating material systems beyond perovskites including organic semiconductors and inorganic crystalline materials and adapting optics setups appropriately to perform such measurements. The group is also part of the Optoelectronics Group (, collectively providing access to world-leading expertise and facilities in the field of organic and hybrid electronics.

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic candidate with a PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science or a related area. A proven track record of scientific publication and presentation at international conferences is essential. Experience in performing time-resolved optical spectroscopy of semiconductor materials is essential including, but not limited to, time-resolved photoluminescence and/or pump-probe techniques including transient absorption. Experience with microscale optical spectroscopy is highly desired. Strong optics experience including building and/or adapting setups is essential. Direct experience working with halide perovskites is highly desired but not essential. The development of independent research projects and research student supervision will also be expected, and existing evidence of the ability to do so would be a plus. The ideal candidate would also interact with a wide international network of collaborators.

Appointment to Research Associate is dependent on having a PhD. Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will initially be appointed as a Research Assistant and amended to research associate when the PhD is awarded. The research assistant salary (grade 5) falls within the range £26,715 to £30,942. The research associate (grade 7) salary falls within the range £32,816 to £40,322.

Applications will be reviewed after the closing date, online interviews conducted shortly thereafter. The candidate would ideally start as soon as possible after 1st November 2020 - there is some flexibility on start date.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 31 October 2022 in the first instance.
