This project is funded by the prestigious Imperial College London President's Excellence Fund for Frontiers Research.

This post is available immediately and the appointment is for 12 months, with the possibility of an extension.

Duties and responsibilities

The research activities of this project are structured around the design of ionic liquids to optimise the dissolution of both cellulose and lignin, the development of cellulose-lignin composite films for packaging applications, and to maximise the techno-economic feasibility and green credentials of manufacturing cellulose-lignin composite films. The post holder will also be expected to undertake and deliver high quality research that is published in high impact peer-reviewed journals and presented at local, national and international meetings, as well as assist with the supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Those appointed at Research Associate level

Hold a PhD (or equivalent) in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials engineering or a closely related discipline.

Those appointed at Research Assistant level

A first / masters degree (or equivalent) in a closely related discipline

The applicant should also have extensive knowledge on:

  • Physics and chemistry of (ligno)cellulosic materials
  • Various characterisation techniques used to quantify and physical and chemical properties of (ligno)cellulosic materials
  • Synthesis of, or able to demonstrate relevant knowledge on the use of, ionic liquids for (ligno)cellulosic materials processing
  • Using techno economic software, e.g., aspen plus, and/or life cycle analysis software, e.g., sima pro.
