Job description

Job summary

The Department of Chemical Engineering is seeking a Research Associate to work in the Tomorrow’s Chemical Technology Lab led by Dr Roberto Rinaldi. We want to understand the mechanisms underlining the deconstruction of plant biomass by Lignin-First Biorefining (also known as Reductive Catalytic Fractionation).

With this post, you will carry out research at the frontier of lignocellulose chemistry and chemo/biocatalysis. Your research work will contribute to the better understanding of the chemical processes involved in the deconstruction of plant biomass as well as their impacts on the efficiency of downstream processing of isolated biomass components. The post is funded by the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 725762, LIGNINFIRST.

Duties and responsibilities

      • You will carry out experiments to the deconstruction of plant biomass by lignin-first biorefining;
      • You will undertake research on enzymatic catalysis of the polysaccharide fraction and fermentation;
      • You will perform any other duties commensurate with the grade of the post as directed by the supervisor.
      • You will manage your research data and prepare internal reports according to internal guidelines;
      • You will present your results in internal group seminars;
      • You will participate in relevant workshops and conferences to present outstanding research findings;
      • You will prepare manuscripts to disseminate the research results in high impact journals;
      • You will perform any other duties commensurate with the grade of the post as directed by the supervisor.

Essential requirements

You must hold a PhD (or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience)

in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Bioengineering or a closely related discipline

In addition, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Sound knowledge plant biomass structure, lignin-carbohydrate complexes (LCC), and reactivity of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin in the context of lignin-first biorefining technologies;
  • Essential knowledge of chromatographic techniques for the characterization of lignocellulose-derived products;
  • Experience of preparative and analytical liquid chromatography (including gel permeation chromatography);
  • Experience of analysis of complex product mixtures by gas chromatography techniques (including gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry);
  • Experience of methods for characterization of lignins;
  • Experience of enzymatic catalysis and fermentations
  • Demonstrated experience in best practices in research and data-keeping;
  • Excellent writing skills and experience of preparing manuscripts for scientific journals;

Further information

Maximum salary on appointment is £41,938 per annum.

The post is available from 1st of October 2020 for 12 months in the first instance, with the possibility of extension. The post is based in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Imperial College London (South Kensington Campus).

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £35,477 to £38,566 per annum.
