Job summary

The Rock Mechanics Research Group at Imperial College has an opening for a Research Associate or Research Assistant. The successful applicant(s) will contribute to the development of an existing advanced geomechanics simulator and will develop computational approaches for modelling fracture growth in heterogeneous rocks. The work will make use of the Imperial College Geomechanics Toolkit, a finite-element based library written in C++, and will be performed under the supervision of Dr. Adriana Paluszny and Prof. Robert Zimmerman.

Duties and responsibilities

The holder of this post is expected to utilise and/or develop/extend an in-house computational finite-element geomechanics code, to study the growth and coalescence of fractures in heterogeneous rock masses. The post-holder is expected to perform original research of international excellence, to write and publish papers in appropriate journals, to disseminate research findings at appropriate conferences and workshops, and to take part in Rock Mechanics Research Group meetings.

Essential requirements

The successful applicant should

  • hold an MSc or PhD degree in a relevant area of Computational Mechanics, Computer Science, Computational Applied Science, Applied Maths, or the equivalent.
  • They should have experience in programming, and in the use of numerical methods for continuum-scale modelling, ideally using finite elements.

This is a full time, fixed term contract for 12 months. 

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant.
