Research Associate in Quantum Technology of Layered Materials x 2 (Fixed Term)

Two positions exist for Two Research Associates in Quantum Technology of Layered Materials.

The aim is to develop deterministic quantum-light emitters in two dimensional and layered materials for integration in quantum photonic networks. Quantum-light emitters will be fabricated using Layered Materials and their heterostructures, targeting the generation of both direct and indirect confined exciton complexes. The quantum emitters will be studied and controlled using continuous wave and ultrafast optics, under applied electric and magnetic fields from cryogenic to room temperatures.

The final aim, in the framework of the Quantum Technology Flagship and in collaboration with Prof. Mete Atature at the Cavendish Laboratory, is to create an integrated quantum photonic circuit integrating deterministic, electrically tuneable quantum photon sources emitting entangled-photon pairs coupled to waveguides, where they will be manipulated, and read-out by single-photon detectors. This is an ambitious research program, with a strong interdisciplinary nature, across engineering, physics, material science and nanotechnology.

The successful candidates will have a PhD in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Nanotechnology, or Material Science with a proven track record in optical physics and spectroscopy of low-dimensional systems. Preference will be given to candidates with a background in solid-state quantum optics, including InGaAs quantum dots, optically active defects in diamond or other semiconductors, or Layered Materials, as demonstrated by high quality publications.

Proven expertise in building or working with custom-made optical setups, using optical or microwave-based schemes to control single-spins in quantum systems, sample processing, fabrication, characterization and integration on photonic structures, as well as a strong understanding of the optical properties of Layered Materials is required.

Experience in handling collaborations within EU projects, including reporting and attendance to frequent project meetings is essential. The candidate will also have the ability to continually update knowledge in the specialist area, engage in continuous professional development and have experience of managing own workload.

The post holders will be located at the Cambridge Graphene Centre, 9 JJ Thomson Avenue, Cambridge, CB3 0FA.

Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD (or equivalent experience).

Salary Ranges: Research Associate: £32,236 - £39,609 Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 24 months in the first instance.

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment.
