The NDE Group is a multidisciplinary research group based in the Mechanical Engineering Department. It is one of the largest Academic NDE Groups in the UK and carries out world-leading research in both fundamental and applied aspects of NDE. It is also the headquarters of the UK Research Centre in NDE (RCNDE). Duties and responsibilities You will be involved in a project that aims to build a novel ultrasonic sensor platform and aid research into how to best deploy and integrate it into a robotic system for inspection in extreme environments. The project will require both simulation and experimental work and will involve the study of ultrasonic sensor and acquisition system construction, manufacturing and performance testing. You will be involved in liaising with suppliers and industrial partners and the ORCA hub partner Universities (Heriot-Watt University, University of Edinburgh, Oxford University and Liverpool University). Essential requirements You must have a first class undergraduate degree or Masters degree in an area relevant to the research subject; this could include Mechanical, Aeronautical or Electrical Engineering. A PhD (or close to completion of a PhD) in a pertinent Mechanical Engineering discipline (e.g. Non-destructive evaluation (NDE), Robotics, Ultrasonics and associated electronic equipment and signal processing) would be useful. You must have a background in Robotics, Analogue and Digital circuit design or NDE. Some experience in at least two of the following areas is required: ultrasonic wave propagation, modelling of magnetic fields, electrical induction phenomena knowledge of signal processing techniques .
