This project aims to develop new methods and understanding of how to deliver additively manufactured adaptable porous surfaces for use in aerofoil structures to reduce noise. At the end of the project, we will have delivered understanding and demonstrated the ability of an aerofoil structure to adapt porosity to different flow conditions, such as flow speed and boundary layer thickness. To achieve the appropriate adaptability using additive manufacturing is technically challenging since it requires shape-memory actuators or piezo-electric materials to be printed with conductive interconnects to deliver and transmit their electrical power and voltage signals, respectively.

This position is part of a large team of multi-disciplinary and multi-institutional researchers funded by the Engineering Physical Science Research Council (EPSRC) Quiet Aerofoil With Adaptive Porous Surfaces (QUADPORS) project led by the University of Southampton. This research initiative is working with partners from Brunel and City Universities. The project is aimed at understanding and exploiting the interactions between porous aerofoils and the boundary layers developing over them for the purpose of optimising noise reductions without compromising aerodynamic performance. The use of adaptive manufacturing technology will be investigated for providing the optimum porosity at different operating conditions.

The project has the following objectives:

(1) To understand how the properties of porous materials integrated within an aerofoil can provide an effective manipulation of the turbulent boundary layer (flow control) that leads to a reduction in aerofoil noise radiation without a significant comprise in aerodynamic performance.

(2) To envisage new designs of porous wall sections that reduce the scattering of the turbulent vorticity into sound (noise control) at the aerofoil leading and trailing edges.

(3) To investigate how porous wall sections can delay boundary layer separation under high loading conditions, and to quantify the corresponding effect on noise reduction.

(4) To fabricate adaptive porous structures by means of Additive Manufacturing (AM) that allows the aerofoil porosity to be adapted for optimum noise reductions at different operating conditions.

We seek applications from people with excellent knowledge of electronics and adaptive materials and innovative electronics fabrication methods, and those with an interest in developing 3D printing / additive manufacturing as a method to incorporate multifunctionality into electronics based devices.
