Research Fellow in Fibre-assisted Wound Theranostics

Are you an ambitious researcher with experience of developing medical devices containing biopolymers and /or degradable fibres for clinical applications? Are you interested in combining aspects of polymer science, fibre manufacturing and wound management in the design of next generation healthcare materials?

You will join the Clothworkers’ Centre for Textile Materials Innovation for Healthcare (CCTMIH) in the School of Design, and work within a multi‑disciplinary team of polymer scientists, bioengineers, clinicians and technology transfer experts. You will pursue the development of a new wound dressing system with integrated therapeutic and diagnostic functions for wound theranostics. As part of your research activities, you will assist with the clinical translation of Leeds wound dressing collagen component (HyFaCol), which has successfully been evaluated in vitro/vivo and which is planned to enter first-in-human clinical trials. The project is sponsored by the Clothworkers’ Company and involves multidisciplinary and cross-faculty collaborations with academic and clinical colleagues based in Leeds Institute of Rheumatic and Musculoskeletal Medicine (LIRMM), School of Dentistry and Chapel Allerton Hospital.

The research will focus on developing advanced hydrogel and fibre-based prototypes containing newly developed biopolymers, e.g. functionalised collagen, for effective wound theranostics and sustainable clinical translation. You will support the team in advancing HyFaCol translation for human use, by securing the necessary regulatory documentation and testing required to access first-in-human trials. You will pursue multiscale manufacturing strategies to accomplish bespoke fibrous configurations suitable for the management of inflamed and /or infected wound environments. You will develop an advanced understanding of prototype’s structure-property-function relationships using strategies such as photoinduced antibacterial and metal chelating chemistries, electrospinning, biochemical assays, and in vitro cell tests.

With a PhD (or with a thesis soon to be submitted for evaluation) related to polymer-based biomaterials, medical device fabrication or regenerative medicine you will have research experience of developing tailored material architectures for clinical applications. You will have proven ability of academic publishing and to work effectively as part of a collaborative team and independently.
