This position is part of the Horizon2020 project 'GREENER: InteGRated systems for Effective ENvironmEntal Remediation', a consortium of partners from several universities and companies across Europe and China.

 

The objective of GREENER is the development of innovative, efficient and low-cost hybrid solutions integrating bioremediation technologies with bio-electrochemical systems. Bioremediation strategies will be combined with the generation of bioelectricity to reach effective removal of pollutants from water and soils.

 

Our approach will combine the analysis of contaminants and the physico-chemical and microbiological characteristics of the polluted environment to establish integrated solutions, considering the effectiveness of biodegradation, the costs, the environmental risks and the social aspects. The project involves fundamental studies of the metabolic activities of microbial communities, and will be performed at lab-scale as well as pilot-tests to test feasibility for in-field applications.

 

The Research Fellow at Surrey will be appointed for a total period of up to 21 months, and will be involved in the analysis of the microbial communities in polluted soil and water, the identification of the best performing microbial species to be tested for their metabolic capabilities for degradation of selected contaminants in microbial fuel cells.

 

We require an individual with expertise in the analysis of microbial communities, including bioinformatic analysis of the data collected, and familiar with the application of biochemical and microbiological methods. Knowledge of bioelectrochemical systems would be an advantage. The appointee will work in the multidisciplinary Systems Microbiology laboratory, composed of microbiologists, biochemists and bioengineers, and will liaise with the colleagues in the EU and China.
