  • Full-time, 2-years fixed-term contract (industry research project); based at RMIT City campus but may be required to work and/or based at other campuses of the University
  • Utilise and further develop your research experience & expertise working as member of the InPAC centre on integrated photonic devices with a particular focus on the establishment of low loss and low reflectivity, robust optical interfaces with the optical waveguides on the lithium niobate on insulator waveguide platform
  • Access and work in facilities equipped with modern facilities at the Micro Nano Research Facility, Melbourne Centre of Nanofabrication and the RMIT Microscopy and Microanalysis Facility
  • Play a pivotal role in contributing to the future movement sensors in collaboration with A/Prof Jong Chow at Australian National University
  • Day-to-day reporting to the Project Leader, Professor Arnan Mitchell, Director, Micro Nano Research Facility, Electronic & Telecommunications Engineering
  • Remuneration at Academic Level B ($98,495 - $116,965) + 17% superannuation

About You & the Role

  • Create and deliver novel techniques to achieve reliable, low-loss and robust optical and electronic interfaces between optical fibres, electronic circuitry and optoelectronic chips
  • Design and produce high-quality mechanical and thermal packages for photonic chips suitable for deployment into the real-world environments
  • Plan, develop and assisting InPAC team at RMIT, partners at The Australian National University and Advanced Navigation to realise photonic chip components for precision movement sensors
  • Actively contribute in preparing and submitting competitive research grant proposals and applications in particularly targeting Category 1 outcomes
  • Work autonomously as well as collaboratively with the team in contributing to quality research showcasing research areas outputs publications, development of new research initiatives, presentation of research findings at conferences and forums
  • Knowledge and experience in preparing and publishing articles and journals in internationally recognised journals as well as keeping up-to-date on trends and outcomes in international research that will benefit the technical advancement of this project
  • Proactively prepare and documenting project progress through participation in monthly meetings with project partners as well as hands-on experience in presenting projects updates and reports to relevant internal and external stakeholders
  • Contribute your 10% of your time to mentor, train & supervise both undergraduate and postgraduate Higher Degree by Research students as part of your coursework teaching activities

You will have:

  • Excellent track record of published research work in design, fabrication and characterization of integrated photonic circuits and have a deep knowledge on robust optical and electronic interfaces and packaging in top journals & conferences
  • Capability to communicate (both verbal and written) and present research findings, concepts and knowledge with sound problem-solving & analytical skills
  • Experience in building effective networks with colleagues and generate research funding through effective liaison with industry and government
  • Ability to manage and organize time effectively and efficiently to conduct innovative research independently and collaboratively across multi-disciplinary team, industry and government to achieve project demands and outcomes
  • Demonstrated experience co-supervising undergraduate and/or postgraduate by research students and the ability to teach in the relevant areas of expertise
  • Commitment to work effectively both as a member of a research team and independently when required, to meet project outcomes and milestones


Mandatory: PhD qualified or submitted thesis in the Electronic or Telecommunications Engineering or in a closely related subject will be considered.

Preferred: Candidate who have accumulated experience in undertaking systematic scientific research and technology development in collaboration with microelectronics fabricators including in-house or external foundries is an added advantage
