Research Fellow in Railway Timetabling and Artificial Intelligence Do you have research experience in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and/or Railway Timetable Optimisation? Are you interested in conducting research to bridge these disciplines? Would you like to explore and implement novel AI technologies to advance the state-of-the-art in railway timetable planning and operation? This role provides an exciting opportunity to contribute to a major research innovation project “Dynamic Train Planning (DTP)”. Funded by InnovateUK and joining forces among railway operations, leading software provider and academic institutions, DTP seeks to develop innovation and capability that allows the railway industry to make near-real time changes to the timetable in use. We are looking for a committed, highly motivated and innovative individual with strong technical research skills in artificial intelligence, optimisation, and/or timetable planning to undertake a key part in the DTP project. More specifically, the research is focused on the development of intelligence and capability for automation in timetable planning and rescheduling. Based at the Institute for Transport Studies (ITS), you will be a member of the DTP project team and you will have the opportunity to interact with the other industry and academic teams in the programme. At ITS, you will be a member of the Spatial Modelling and Dynamics group and will be expected to contribute towards the vibrant research culture within ITS. Opportunities for the development of an independent research profile will also be provided. Your qualifications and experience will include an honours degree followed by a postgraduate qualification in a relevant discipline (such as computer science, mathematics, physical science, engineering or transport studies). The opportunity would suit someone with skills in computer programming, mathematical modelling and/or optimisation.
